Works well for the right application
OK, first off, I would NOT recommend this tinting film for car windows that move. For example, I would not put this on any window that rolls down. This is NOT like the tinting film the car factory installs. This is a much different product that is better for blocking sun on windows that do not slide/move.
I bought this stuff to reduce the amount of light coming out of a bright alarm clock. Yeah, sounds weird, but I bought a bedroom digital alarm clock that was WAY too bright (like a nightlight.) I loved the features but it would keep me awake. SO, I put this tinting film on the face of the clock and voila the display is darkened and I can sleep with my clock now.
So, to describe this film. It's the kind of static-cling film that keeps stickers on glass. You know those stickers that are Christmas decorations that you can put on a window, and then peel off after the holiday and save for the next year? THAT is what this stuff is. It's relatively thick (maybe like 2 sheets of paper together) and sticks by static to flat surfaces.
I would recommend this film if you have a window that you'd like to drastically reduce the amount of light passing through (it is a very dark tint) and the window does not move. So, a household window that doesn't get touched a lot, or a car window that doesn't move (like the back glass.) And, when you apply this stuff, it doesn't sit perfectly flat and thus has some distortions. The best application would be if you'd like to seriously tint the window near where your infant rides in the car (and thus will remove the film in a year or two) and you don't lower that window. I bet if you lowered the window this stuff could get peeled off or caught.
In the end, if used for the right purpose (temporary tinting of non-moving glass surfaces) this is a fine product. But, for it to be used for moving windows, or as a permanent car-window tint, I'd avoid it for sure.
Not perfect, but exactly what I expected and more than meets my needs
I remember the cling on decals when I was a kid that would instantly stick when you pressed them to the window. They were great.
This is exactly the same thing except it's tinted at 5% VLT. While you can simply press it on and use a credit card/gift card to squeeze out the air bubbles, it goes on much easier and looks better if you wash the window FIRST with a mild soap like "Lemon Joy" or "Dawn." Anything really as long as it isn't ammonia-based. Use a spray bottle full of water to wet both the window and the side of the film that will touch the window before applying. This will allow you to both slide the film into position better AND to get the air bubbles out easier.
Applying with the method above allowed me to be able to roll my window down with the cling-film on it (after it dried of course). I've not had a problem with it yet (though it's only been 1 day). This is a great option for me because we needed to darken out the window where our 7 month old sits and putting a blanket up was starting to not work since she can pull it down now.
The sun is almost completely blocked out from this window now. It's great (we have 20% tint from factory on the window already - actually it's not tint, the window is manufactured with 20% darkness in it but I digress).
I'll be buying MUCH more of this stuff and using on my window (driver side); Pulled over by a cop? Peel off before he gets out of his car - "Oh what officer? What tint? You must have been seeing things. :p
I'll also be using on my house windows to keep it cool during the summer (we live in California).
-1 star because it's not PERFECT; though for my needs it's close!
Reduce your air conditioning bill, use this for temporary shade
I use this on my south side windows in summer with great results in cooling rooms. Fairly easy to install, to do a fine job of it you will need assistance. Remains in place all summer and is easily removed in winter. Reduces temperatures and reduces solar glare.
