A Good Addition to Your Personal Security Plan4
The GE Keypad Controlled Door Alarm is a good addition to your home security plan. The alarms are easy to install (just hang the alarm unit on the door frame and use the provided double-sided tape to emplace the magnetic switches). You program your own security code, and thereafter this code is needed both to arm and disarm the alarm.

There is a 45-second arming delay, allowing you to set your alarm and leave the protected area. Upon entering a protected area there is a 30-second delay before the alarm sounds - to keep the alarm from sounding you must enter your security code within that time limit.

Unfortunately the alarm does not have an instant-on alarm function thereby allowing an immediate alarm if a protected door is opened. (The alarm does have an instant-on "chime mode" giving a single short tone if a protected door is opened and the alarm is set to "chime".) In alarm mode, the alarm is loud and would easily wake a sleeping person, and probably frighten off a burglar who had entered the protected area.

These alarms are a good addition for use in apartments, dorms, barracks, and other places where a permanent or complex alarm installation is not appropriate. The alarms are excellent for securing internal areas such as storage closets, basements or attics.

The primary disadvantage of this alarm is that it can be taken down and smothered or smashed to silence the alarm. Still this causes the burglar to focus on the alarm instead of his target. However, when combined with a motion sensor alarm (i.e. the "Strobe Motion Alarm with Remote") you have an inexpensive and effective local alarm system - GE Keypad Controlled Door Alarms on your doors and windows, and a motion sensing alarm to protect internal areas.
