It was the year 2015 and for millions of gamers it was the year 'The World' came to an end. Caught within a mysterious fire, all the datacenters containing the worlds most popular game was destroyed, taking with it all the information about the game. Taking elements from what was to be a different game, 'The World' is reborn as 'The World R:2'. However as millions of players, both new and old flood the servers, they soon discover that this new version isn't as forgiving as it's previous incarnation. Being one of these new players, Haseo finds himself not only the target of countless Player Killers, but of two rivaling guilds, who hope to use him in pursuit of their own agendas. Featuring the original creative team from .hack//SIGN. Genre: Action/Sci-Fi/Drama.

The third broadcast series based on the PlayStation 2 game .hack//G.U., .hack//Roots (2006) continues the imaginative designs and intriguing storytelling that characterized .hack//Sign (2002) and .hack//Legend of the Twilight (2003). The role-playing game know as The World is infested with PKs: Player Killers who needlessly slay their cyber-opponents. Haseo learns about PKs the hard way during his first game. He's revived by Ovan, the leader of the largely defunct Twilight Brigade that searches for the mysteriousKey of the Twilight--which Tsukasa pursued in Sign. The Brigade still has a few members: elegant, intuitive Shino; obnoxiously upbeat newcomer Tabby; and long-suffering Sakisaka. Pitted against them are the sinister members of the TaN guild. The rival guilds pursue Haseo, who possesses a mysterious talent that will affect the fate of The World. Koichi Mashimo directs with his familiar, assured skill, and the special effects are impressive. .hack//Roots will please fans of the earlier series and introduce newcomers to the attractions and dangers of The World. Pacing..... a little........... slow.
Well, actually the pacing is pretty much like .Hack//Sign and the story feels much more like that series than the disappointing .Hack//Legend of the Twilight, so if the first series was good for you then this season looks like it probably will be. For those new to the .Hack series this set will probably be infuriating and impenetrable.
But I like it.
Slow start but I see potential
The episodes on this DVD are slow to get to a point. The creators seem to be trying (too hard and needlessly) to emphasize that there's more than what you see going on. If you've watched .hack//SIGN then I think this will be somewhat more interesting to you because it feels like a continuation.
virtual world gaming Japanese style
This dvd is a set of episodes about about a virtual reality
game called "The World". In this one the two guilds are rivals for membership
and finding the ultimate secret of the game.
The theme music is kind of irritating at times,
but some of the composition as background music are really kind of well done.
The male main character is the newbie Haseo
who actually appears more female looking than male by western standards.
no one would be caught dead with his hair-do?
Or the cheesy jump suit he wears either...The female
players seem either weaker or more evil than their male counterparts.
The format is kind of hypnotic in effect and seems meant
to get kids to buy into online multiperson
interactive gaming as a sport.
