Fixed the problem!
When we bought our house, there were already hammer arrestors installed on at valves in the laundry room. However, they didn't seem to have any affect. The pipes still banged very loudly when the washing machine was filling. I installed these directly on the supply lines in the basement ceiling (about 4 feet under the valves in the laundry room) and they solved the problem. Case closed!

By the way, I'd recommend that you sweat the tee onto the line before screwing in the arrestor. I've read that excessive heat from soldering can destroy the seals inside the piston.
