Product Description
Exotic, almost orchid-like, the Orchid Ginger is one of those little known, but must-have garden plants. Once established it will self-seed quite freely. Hardy in zones 6-9. Proper name: Roscoea purpurea Plant History: William Roscoe, founder of the first botanical garden in Liverpool, England, who died in 1831, is commemorated by this genus of 17 species. Roscoeas are closely related to ginger and they are from the high altitudes of the Himalayas and China. THE ROYAL BOTANIC GARDENS, KEW Kew grows more species in its 300 acres than any other garden in the world and is an important scientific institution. The magnificent glasshouses, including Decimus Burton's famous Palm House, display a wide range of plants from rainforest to desert and provide the visitor with a visual and fragrant treat whatever the time of year.
