Really good, really expensive
This item is exactly like Energizer(R) Hard Case Lantern, except that the incandescent bulb is now a powerful K2 LED by Luxeon. Oh yeah, and this one is twice the $$$. Is this one really worth paying double for essentially the same thing? Probably not. Also, I retrofitted the incandescent version with a halogen bulb (instead of the stock krypton bulb), so what follows is based on that.

I recently got a chance to compare the 2 side by side. Eveready did a nice job of matching the beams: they are almost identical in size and shape, including the spill light, except that the halogen is yellowish. As far as power, both were similar enough to call it a draw. This speaks very well of the LED, since such a thing was considered impossible just a couple of years ago. The incandescent version will survive a 15 foot drop, but the bulb sometimes blows and you will have to replace (sort of like a Maglite) it; this new LED version of the Hard Case solves that problem.

The advantage this LED version has is longer battery life; also, the LED will not blow if you drop it on the ground like the halogen version. However, you will pay double the price, and this $$$ amount will buy you an awful lot of batteries and spare bulbs in the halogen version. If you use it everyday (like at work), you might in the long run save $$$ and inconvenience, but it is hard to imagine anyone wanting to take this behemoth to a job regularly. Otherwise, I suggest you get the regular incandescent version.

Special note: the LED in this one speaks well of Energizer quality. The LED is the purest white I have ever seen in any LED flashlight. I immediately got some other, highly rated and expensive LED flashlights, and they looked blue in comparison to the light in this Hard Case Lantern.

Good value
Excellent power and run time for the price. Well made, rugged; not much more to say. Please, no complaints that it does not come with a user manual. It's a FLASHLIGHT, not a particle accelerator! LOOK at the exploded view on the packaging and NOTE that the lens bezel unscrews to allow access to insert the batteries. It's not rocket science.

The Hard Case line in general is well made, rugged, and a generally good value. Shop carefully; this model can be had at a certain home improvement retailer for under forty dollars....

Great lantern, one of the best I have ever bought.Phillips LED and a classic Energizer solid case makes this new generation of their old classic lantern the best, and it will only get better as the LED's get brighter and more energy efficient.50 hour run time or more on 4 d cells!
Bright white color light.Unit is heavy at 4.75 lbs. but it still floats and is water tight.Nice grip handle and with the heavy weight would make a nice weapon in the dark :)
