Customer Reviews
Excellent quality
I've used several cheaper hose reels from different manufacturers (I have an acre of garden and over 1000 ft of hoses scattered around the property) and this one is much, much better quality. It is all metal, the central "axle" or shaft is machined from solid aluminum (not just cast, or worse yet, plastic) with a good sized snap ring on the end, hose fittings are solid brass and very sturdy, the handle is sturdy and well made (and "keyed" to the central shaft with a bolt that goes through it and the shaft, not just a "set screw" type friction attachment that will eventually wear and spin on the shaft when you try to roll up a long/heavy hose), and the supplied hose (to connect to your faucet) is heavy duty. If you know something about metal machining and understand the difference between solid machined parts and cheaper cast (or even worse, stamped) metal parts you'll appreciate the quality of this hose reel. I'm going to replace all of my cheaper reels (which are all leaking and malfunctioning or falling apart in one way or another after just a couple years) with this model. And Lowe's has it for just $75. Compared to the much lower quality (and mostly plastic) reels that sell for $50-$60 or more, it is more than worth every penny.
Ames Wall Mount Reel
Everything that you need to mount is in the box except a masonry drill bit. I mounted into brick and needed a 1/2" masonry drill bit. Masonry anchors included. Well built, solid. Regarding the stiffness previously described in another review: Not noticeable after mounting to wall. Most importantly, no LEAKS! Would have liked a longer faucet connection hose. Wife can reel in hose with no problem. Highly recommended.
Finally an Excellent Product
I am a Mechanical and Software Engineer and am rarely even "pleased" with a purchase.
This product is currently priced on amazon for $140.
I purchased this unit from Home Depot for only $89 !!
Finally a team of people got together and built an excellent piece of work to be proud of.
Notable "+++"
The die cast aluminum frame and reel is strong, lightweight, durable, easy to clean, and has a beautiful finish. It spins freely and smoothly right out of the box. Not like some cheesy plastic thing at all.
The axle and bearing assemblies for the reel and handle have a confident and smooth response with no wiggle or play. The handle plastic is very rigid and comfortable.
The mounting was a breeze due to large enough flanges to which the bolts mount, which allowed some minor alignment adjustments and for power tools to gain access. Mounting was really easy with 2 people.
Nice touch providing mounting template on the box panel. I didn't use it, but many people problaby will.
The shelf on top of the unit will come in handy and slotted so it will stay clean and dry.
No leaks or drips.
Its pretty :-)
If I had to say any "---"
The diagrams and instructions were small and not of high quality print making it difficult to read (I think it's pretty obvious how to mount it anyway).
The input hose connection socket was stuck at first, but with a little wiggling around it now spins freely (I think locktight was added for some reason).
The shelf on top is slotted which allows hose ends to fall through. Possibly a different pattern would solve the problem (holes instead of slots ?).
This is a very nice piece of work .... they should be proud.
Nice work Ames !! I will look for their products from now on.
Finally impressed.
