Customer Reviews
Kleen Kanteen vs. Sigg
I received two metal bottles from I ordered from Amazon. A Sigg and a Kleen Kanteen (KK).
The Sigg is 1 liter and made out of aluminum. The diameter of the bottle (3.15") is slightly too big for my car's cup holder, but fits my fanny pack pockets. The outside has some cool purple paint (comes in different colors/designs). There's a coating on the inside to protect the water from the aluminum; this coating is proprietary, so they won't tell you what it is. It does say not to use the bottle for long term storage, which makes me nervous, as does the aluminum.
The KK is 27 Oz and made out of stainless steel. The diameter is too small for the car/fanny pack (rattles around), but fits nicely into a bike bottle cage. The 27 Oz is less than I prefer, but is probably OK for most purposes.
Both seem like high quality items, which they should be for $20 each. Both have loop top screw on caps (KK has other options too) with gasket seals. KK's top is made of stainless steel on the side that touches the water, whereas the Sigg has a plastic top (nylon?). The top on the Sigg has a fine thread, which can cross thread more easily. The size of the opening on the KK is larger, which I like. Both have a smooth edge that's easy to drink from. Both pass the turn upside down test (no leaks).
I rinsed both out with hot water several times, then put distilled water into each from my Waterwise distiller. The KK does impart a slight metallic taste, whereas I can't detect any added taste from the Sigg. I can also smell the metal from the KK. I don't know of any health problems from stainless steel, and in fact my distiller is made from stainless steel, so I'm not sure what to think about the added taste. It may be more of a smell than a taste from the KK, since when I pour water that has been in the KK overnight into a glass, there is very little taste difference.
If KK made a 1 liter bottle with the standard diameter (about 3 inches, like plastic bottles), deciding which to use would be a no brainer for me. With the different trade off's, I'm not sure which I'll end up using, but probably the KK; the aluminum and coating just seem like they have too many potential health problems over the long term. KK does make a larger 40 oz bottle, but the diameter is too big for me at 3.5 inches.
most problems can be solved with Avent accessories...
I have always loved the idea of the Avent system, because of the interchangeable sippy spouts. My kid is a biter; the spouts of his sippy cups invariably get badly scratched up and therefore need to be replaced. With most sippies this means replacing the whole cup, which gets expensive! The Avent system eliminates this problem; however, their sippy cups leak like mad (the lids unscrew WAY too easily) and the bottles are made from nasty leaching plastic. The Via system is #5 plastic but too clunky and cumbersome to use as a sippy.
The Klean Kanteen is the perfect solution: safe stainless steel and the convenience of interchangeable Avent sippy spouts. I was beyond thrilled when I learned that it existed.
The adapter cap has two pieces: the part that screws into the bottle, and then a piece that is EXACTLY like the white screw ring from an Avent bottle (except that it's black, of course, and just a little bit bigger). This means three things:
1. ANY Avent sippy spout or nipple will fit in it. Both the white and the green spouts are meant for babies first learning to use a sippy cup; this is probably why many toddlers get frustrated trying to drink from the spout that comes with this bottle. There is a "toddler" spout available that is much easier to drink from.
2. It will leak if you over-tighten it. DON'T screw it as tight as it will go or it will leak.
3. The Avent dome caps fit. (I am surprised that nobody seems to have noticed this before!)
(It seems like the Avent handles should fit, but they don't, or at least I can't seem to get them on quite right - they cause pretty excessive leaking. It's a shame because that would make this cup absolutely perfect for younger toddlers. For my 2-year-old, though, it's just fine without handles.)
I plan on getting a neoprene cover for it to keep the contents cold (and because my son saw the one I have on MY Klean Kanteen and wants one for himself!) but other than that, this sippy is pretty much perfect. I love it!
Go with metal, dump your plastic
Some versions of this bottle have an all-plastic cap, some are half metal. Since you can't tell, you should ask the seller if the cap is partly plastic attached to a metal stopper. Either way, it seals with an o-ring.
Pro:
-Metal design won't leech chemicals and won't absorb odors or stain like plastic
-Cap seals very tight with a quarter twist
-Cap is weighted/designed in such a way so that when it is removed and sitting on a flat surface, the cap will lie at a 45-degree angle so that all surfaces that might make contact with your liquid won't touch the ground
-Beefy loop on cap great for a cord for carrying or for a name tag
-Very light and compact
-Wide mouth for easy cleaning or adding ice cubes
-Skinny, fits in my car's drink holder fine (2005 Toyota Camry)
Con:
-Cap crossthreads pretty easily so take your time (no damage, just gets stuck)
-Appears to be single wall construction, so not a good insulator and sweats condensation
-Lip is rolled/formed, will hold moisture after cleaning and is a possible bacteria source
-Also this "hollow lip" holds water, tends to drip on you
-No way to attach lid to canister
-Very tall, limits placement in the refrigerator
-Can't see in (obviously) so you have to pick it up to tell how much is there, or open it to see what's in it
-For plastic cap versions, the cap is hard to clean by hand... the threads have some weird geometry that make it very hard to get into all the corners
-Also, for all plastic cap versions, please note that ours tends to take on water when diswashered...
Neutral:
-Unlike plastic it will dent, however won't crack either hence the neutral
Bottom line: despite cons, recommended.
