This panel has no ballasts to burn out like other plant lights. It does not run hot, just warm. You will not experience unsightly brown burned leaves when they accidentally touch the LEDs. This is common with most other lights that get very hot. This more controlled running temperature reduces the need to water so often and keeps rooms with plants from getting uncomfortably hot in the summer months requiring additional air conditioning. Extreme energy efficiency permits this new LED panel to pay for itself many times over each year in electricity savings. It saves 50% to 90% in energy consumption compared to incandescent bulbs or fluorescent tubes. Wide angle projection insures uniform leaf coverage. Scientifically calculated even blending of red and blue LEDs eliminates the time consuming task of repositioning separate colored lights back and forth trying to achieve uniform exposure. 14 to 16 hours per day is all that is necessary for maximum plant health with this wave blended lighting system. This allows distances 6" and less between the LEDs and the plants accelerating photosynthesis. Red and blue wavelengths are for growing and flowering of plants. The typical white plant lights that are very hot is unnecessary and just consume excessive electricity. The purity of the LED generated light lengthens flowering periods. These LEDs turn on instantly and can be turned on by hand each day or work well with all standard lamp timers. The design of this new all in one Full Spectrum plant lighting panel allows maximum level photosynthesis food production, growth and flowering all in one. It is the new Full Spectrum system providing maximum plant health, beauty and productivity. These LED light panels are perfect as an all year plant light for permanent plant benches and especially productive for spring vegetable and flower seedling development. Attractive Product, Terrible Results
Greenhouse, Hydroponic LED Lamp / B001MVWYZA
I bought this hydroponic lamp to use with my indoors herb garden. Our kitchen doesn't sustain a lot of direct daylight, and I had read that pretty much any herb garden would need strong supplemental light in order to thrive. I purchased this LED light because I was drawn by the cheap operating costs and the low residual heat. In the interest of fairness, I will note that the residual heat is almost non-existent and the operating costs are quite low, but none of that really matters as this light just does not work.
My seeds (purchased from four different, reputable companies) simply did not sprout, despite dedicated heat mats and plant food. My purchased herb plants - including three different kinds of basil - died within a few weeks under this light. The spicy globe basil shriveled up into itself and died; the Thai basil dropped its leaves entirely; and the lemon basil just stopped standing up - the stalks just lay over and died.
I cannot tell you why, scientifically, this light does not work. I can simply warn you that if you hope to use this as a substitute for direct sunlight for indoor plants that would otherwise only get indirect sunlight, you should spend your money elsewhere. As a side note, this light did not come with any kind of hanging apparatus - the unit is just the solid square with side holes drilled around the edges - and we had to mock up quite the apparatus just to be able to use it at all without having to worry about slippage and breaking - it just wasn't worth it. Shame I cannot retrieve that effort and my wasted money, but I can warn others that this attractive plant light is simply not a good investment.
Pretty Sweet & Really Cheap!
These first generation LED panels are pretty sweet and really cheap as LED grow light technology goes. Though only 14 watts and in the Bi-Band (blue and Red), these LED panels are great in concept, but no longer state of the art. What you really want are the Quad-band 45 watt 3rd generation LED panels (or bigger) which are just now hitting the market. It would take three of these bi-band panels to equal the power of one 45 watt Quad-band and still be deficient in bandwidth. However, the price can't be beat for what you get, and I think we'll see the price drop even further as the 3rd generation Quad-band technology becomes more common place. Considering the LED panels are only 14 watts and generate only 400 lumens, they're really not powerful enough to support the energy needed for the flowering process but if used in tandem with multiple LED panels, or as support lighting for another lighting source, they can deliver the power you need. That said they are LED lights and will last for a really long time. I use two of these panels in conjunction with several compact florescent lights and they're perfect for my needs. However, if you want this panel to be a primary light source, you'll be a little disappointed. You'll want a high wattage 3rd generation panel in that scenario, but the price tag will be nearly triple the cost and quickly go up from there. Knowing all I did when I bought my two LED light panels, I'm completely satisfied with my purchase. They're everything I expected them to be. Educate yourself before investing, you'll be glad you did.
Terrific for seedlings, young plants
This is a great light for seedlings and young plants when placed about 3" above. It covers a one foot square area in my indoor greenhouse.
It is not enough light to sustain heavy vegetative growth in vegetables but it gives them a terrific start. I'm replacing this with a 90W UFO type light for further growth and will use this fixture for germination in future.
It does help to do some research before starting to garden indoors with LEDs. I've found it advisable to keep an incandescent clip fixture along with this fixture to provide warmth. Take the time to read and understand what kind of light LEDs provide and how in order to make them work optimally. I chose this item to begin my experiments with LEDs and quickly discovered that wattage is the key. I'm not at ALL sorry I bought this, as it will make my preparations for spring that much easier, but it should not be purchased as a means to grow full-sized sunloving plants indoors alone. I imagine it would work well with low-light houseplants in a tight formation.
