Mis-Named and Inappropriate Offering from Amazon
Over the years, I've been a total fan of Amazon.com (as well as becoming a shareholder when it became possible. Their quality, pricing, speed of service, hassle-free returns, etc. are all features that make being an Amazon customer a great experience.
Recently I bought a Kindle 2 and have ordered the Kindle DX. However, I must say that the 2-Year Extended Warranty is not a pleasing thing for me.
1. It is NOT a "Two-Year" Extended Warranty. It is, in fact a warranty which extends protection for one year beyond the one year which is included in the Kindle purchase price.
2. It is terribly overpriced. According to my reading of many sources about extended warrantees, the profit margin on these is nearly 98%!!! There have been states which have severely limited such warrantees since they are in fact predatory in nature. BestBuy's extended warrantees are a joke, for example. I've had a two year battle with them over a warranty on a large screen TV.
3. They are only covering you for one incident.
4. The offer of "hassle-free" processing in case of trouble....hey, that ought to be simply included in ANY offering of such services, not something which has to be paid extra for.
Doesn't cover the most likely failure: the battery
The aspect of this 'warranty' that has the best chance of being useful is the coverage for accidental damage. But, you should decide for yourself if paying about one-quarter the cost of the item on the chance that you might break it within two years is sensible... if you generally don't break things, and are less than 25% likely to break this, then it doesn't make sense from an actuarial point of view. (Do you find that you break more than one-quarter of your electronic items?)
As for extending the manufacturer's warranty against defects: it's pretty darned unlikely for a manufacturing defect to show up after a year of use. The only thing that will likely stop working in that second year of use is the battery, but this warranty specifically excludes coverage of the battery (look at the Terms and Conditions, Section 9 (Exclusions), Paragraph I (Consumable items): "Consumable items are defined as any part that is considered consumable by the manufacturer and/or any item that is designed to be consumed (wear out) during the life of the Product, regardless if it is consumer replaceable or not.")
Remember that Service Net, like any company, makes its profit by taking in more money than it pays out. Just like gambling, you have a chance to come out ahead, but the odds are in favor of the house. On average, extended warranty customers spend much more than they receive in return.
So, save your money, buy a bunch of Kindle books instead. :)
Problems with the Company
"I bought a kindle dx and an extended warranty. They sent me a certificate starting the warranty before the kindle was scheduled to be delivered to me. I told them to cancel the contract and give me my money back. Seems like a good way to skim off the promised warranty time, and if they are going to be doing that, I don't want to do business with them. Now, I find they still haven't refunded my card three days later and have been put to the aggravation of filing a complaint with my credit card provider to contest the charge. I wish I had reviewed other customers comments before purchasing this warranty. From what I can tell it doesn't really cover much anyway. I think Amazon should take a close look at whether they should be doing business with these people. This is not an Amazon product, but is provided by an outside company."
