Tropic of CancerTropic of Cancer by Henry Miller
Buy used from: $12.50
I'm embarrassed as I reread this book now, but at the time it impressed me deeply with the idea that life must be lived in the moment and by your own lights you must find your way.
Look Homeward, AngelLook Homeward, Angel by Thomas Wolfe
Buy new: $12.24 / Used from: $5.50
This book is also embarrassing to reread now. But, as a new New Yorker and a young person being preyed upon by the usual ambitious and horney types in the University field, the fashion industry, and the entertainment industry, this book was a revelation.
Desert SolitaireDesert Solitaire by Edward Abbey
Buy new: $10.76 / Used from: $2.77
I majored in Environmental Studies. Edward Abbey shared my youthful outrage at the urban sprawl I was witnessing in my home state of NJ. However, I'm not the warrior about anything that I once dreamed of being. But I have always admired people who have great passion, even if sometimes they go a little over the top. But I've learned to beware of zealots.
The Virginian: A Horseman of the Plains (Oxford Worlds Classics)The Virginian: A Horseman of the Plains (Oxford Worlds Classics) by Owen Wister
Buy new: $8.54 / Used from: $6.62
This book is at the top of my lists of favorites. I think it's THE classic American Western. I was madly in love with the Virginian for years. It's not a straight forward romance, there are a lot of turn of the century, western atmopheric details and anecdotes included. Don't miss this wonderful book, based on the true experiences of Wister himself, the son a famous actress.
The Long Walk: The True Story of a Trek to FreedomThe Long Walk: The True Story of a Trek to Freedom by Slavomir Rawicz
Buy new: $11.53 / Used from: $6.86
I recently refound this book, after years of telling people about it and no one having heard of it. This is an amazing story of someone who never gives up and somehow escapes Siberia over snow, the Gobi Desert, the Himalayas into India. I love to reread this book. It gives me courage.
Light in August (The Corrected Text)Light in August (The Corrected Text) by William Faulkner
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $0.18
Faulkner fascinated me. Every time he wrote, he seemed like a magician with words and story. I read everything of his. But one must take Southern writers in small doses.
O Pioneers! (Oxford World's Classics)O Pioneers! (Oxford World's Classics) by Willa Cather
Buy new: $9.95 / Used from: $2.85
I love Willa Cather and have read and reread "My Antonia" many times. The descriptions, the characters, the story, the vividness of prairie life all just astonish me.
The House of Mirth (Wordsworth Classics)The House of Mirth (Wordsworth Classics) by Edith Wharton
Buy new: $4.99 / Used from: $1.46
This is my favorite Edith Wharton. Another book to read and reread.
The Mill on the Floss (Penguin Classics)The Mill on the Floss (Penguin Classics) by George Eliot
Buy new: $8.00 / Used from: $1.95
This is actually my very favorite George Eliot book. It's tragic and the characters are so compelling that it just wrings all the sadness out you.
Tess of the D'Urbervilles (Penguin Classics)Tess of the D'Urbervilles (Penguin Classics) by Thomas Hardy
Buy new: $9.00 / Used from: $0.48
This was the first Thomas Hardy I ever read, and it knocked me out. I love his evocotive, highly romantic writing. Went on and read all of his works and was never disappointed.
The Return of the Native (Modern Library Classics)The Return of the Native (Modern Library Classics) by Thomas Hardy
Buy new: $8.95 / Used from: $0.01
This is so good. I think this is the one with the Redal man, who is dyed red from his profession. So Romantic
Far from the Madding Crowd (Modern Library Classics)Far from the Madding Crowd (Modern Library Classics) by Thomas Hardy

Yes, this one can't be missed.
Little Women (Signet Classics)Little Women (Signet Classics) by Louisa May Alcott

Adored this book, and the movie with Katherine Hepburn was great, too.

If you haven't read this, it's well worth a look.
