Our Babies, Ourselves: How Biology and Culture Shape the Way We ParentOur Babies, Ourselves: How Biology and Culture Shape the Way We Parent by Meredith Small
Buy new: $11.56 / Used from: $6.00
Fascinating book by an anthropologist...looks at the way we parent our babies in a variety of cultures. It's interesting to see how our American parenting style encourages independence at such an early age, very different from the focus in other cultures, where they are more focused on nurturing and support.
The Grizzly Maze: Timothy Treadwell's Fatal Obsession with Alaskan BearsThe Grizzly Maze: Timothy Treadwell's Fatal Obsession with Alaskan Bears by Nick Jans
Buy new: $24.95 / Used from: $0.05
After seeing "Grizzly Man," I wanted to know more about this unusual man who was determined to live among the grizzlies. Very bizarre choices he made!
Water: A Novel (Sidwha, Bapsi)Water: A Novel (Sidwha, Bapsi) by Bapsi Sidhwa
Buy new: $11.53 / Used from: $5.74
Bapsi Sidhwa is a friend of the writer and director (Deepa Mehta) of the beautiful and sad movie "Water," and she wrote a novel based on the screenplay. I've read a number of Sidhwa's other books, and she is a talented writer. The story is tragic and heartwarming at the same time.
Shooting Water: A Memoir of Second Chances, Family, and FilmmakingShooting Water: A Memoir of Second Chances, Family, and Filmmaking by Devyani Saltzman
Buy new: $23.95 / Used from: $0.01
Deepa Mehta's daughter wrote a memoir about working with her mother on the movie "Water," and also about her troubled relationship with her mom and how the (also troubled) movie-making was a redemptive experience for them.
Final JeopardyFinal Jeopardy
When looking for novels set in New York City (preparing for our trip there), I discovered this writer--a former sex crimes prosecutor who writes books about the sex crimes unit in NYC. This is the precursor to "Law & Order: SVU" and her first novel. I will read more.
Are We There YetAre We There Yet by Scott Haas
Buy used from: $0.01
I ran across this one in a bookstore; it's by an NPR commentator about his experiences traveling with his children. Some of the chapters were better than others...I found him to be a bit of a snob at times and questioned some of his choices! But a good travel essay read.
Fabulous NobodiesFabulous Nobodies by Lee Tulloch
Buy new: $12.30 / Used from: $0.49
Billed as "Sex and the City" before Carrie Bradshaw came on the scene, this is a parody of the New York fashion and club scene in the 80s. It received rave reviews, but I found it a bit difficult to get through. Perhaps because of my overall lack of interest in fashion and what's "in" at the time. Or maybe I'm just picky about parodies!
Unnatural Exposure (Kay Scarpetta)Unnatural Exposure (Kay Scarpetta) by Patricia Cornwell
Buy used from: $0.01
Another interesting Cornwell read--but in some of these mystery novels, I'm finding it hard to get past some of the outdated computer technology. I like to read mystery writers in chronological order, and I'm still back in the 90s. This novel is dated in many ways.
Girl in a BoxGirl in a Box by Sujata Massey
Buy new: $20.36 / Used from: $0.01
Another great Sujata Massey book--not her best, but hard to put down nevertheless. Rei Shimura goes to work in a Tokyo department store as a spy for the U.S. government. Some of the plot details are a bit murky, and it doesn't all hold together as well as it could, but I loved reading about the inside of a Japanese department store!
The Last King of ScotlandThe Last King of Scotland by Giles Foden
Buy new: $11.20 / Used from: $0.25
I wanted to read this before I see the movie. Foden based this story on a real-life character (not Amin, but Amin's Scottish doctor), who is still alive and kicking in the UK. I didn't know much about Amin's reign as dictator of Uganda, and this novel certainly gave me a disturbing picture of what went on.
My Sister's Keeper: A NovelMy Sister's Keeper: A Novel by Jodi Picoult
Buy new: $9.36 / Used from: $0.01
Gotta love that Jodi Picoult! Another gut-wrenching read that makes you think about what's important to you...and also surprises you at the end. It made me want to spend some quality time with my sister!
Copy This! : Lessons from a Hyperactive Dyslexic who Turned a Bright Idea Into One of America's Best CompaniesCopy This! : Lessons from a Hyperactive Dyslexic who Turned a Bright Idea Into One of America's Best Companies by Paul Orfalea
Buy new: $16.46 / Used from: $0.01
This is the story of a hyperactive dyslexic who started one of the country's most successful companies, but it is more about his business history and philosophy than a personal epic. Interesting, but I got bogged down sometimes in all of the Kinkotrivia. He appears to be a highly dynamic, if volatile, man...probably fascinating to know but difficult to work with!
Traveling While MarriedTraveling While Married by Mary-Lou Weisman
Buy new: $15.95 / Used from: $0.01
Enjoyable, light travel essays about traveling with her husband throughout the world. Worthwhile reading for traveling couples.
As Hot as It Was You Ought to Thank Me: A NovelAs Hot as It Was You Ought to Thank Me: A Novel by Nanci Kincaid
Buy new: $10.19 / Used from: $0.01
Southern coming-of-age novel...well written and engrossing, but disturbing at times.
Bait and Switch: The (Futile) Pursuit of the American DreamBait and Switch: The (Futile) Pursuit of the American Dream by Barbara Ehrenreich
Buy new: $10.40 / Used from: $0.01
Not as good as Nickel & Dimed, but worth a read. Ehrenreich set herself up for failure--did she think they'd offer her a corporate position with no business experience? As a hiring manager, I wouldn't have given her resume a second glance. However, this book gave me sympathy for the job seeker and made me appreciate my own job and company.
Everything Is Illuminated: A NovelEverything Is Illuminated: A Novel by Jonathan Safran Foer
Buy new: $10.04 / Used from: $4.75
I am looking forward to reading a chronological novel next. This one was a bit hard to follow, and I'm glad I stuck with it. I especially appreciated the story of friendship between Jonathan and Alex.
Beneath a Marble Sky: A Love StoryBeneath a Marble Sky: A Love Story by John Shors
Buy new: $10.08 / Used from: $3.15
Wonderful historical fiction about the building of the Taj Mahal. I wish I had read something like this before viewing the Taj...it would have made me appreciate it so much more!
Prep: A NovelPrep: A Novel by Curtis Sittenfeld
Buy new: $10.08 / Used from: $0.01
I had a difficult time relating to the characters in this coming-of-age story at an east coast prep school. Not necessarily one I would recommend.
Eye ContactEye Contact by Cammie McGovern
Buy used from: $2.75
Excellent story and murder mystery of sorts about an autistic boy who appears to have been present at the murder of a classmate.
The Girls: A NovelThe Girls: A Novel by Lori Lansens
Buy new: $10.07 / Used from: $0.01
Memorable, bittersweet, and beautiful story of a set of conjoined twins. It was a wonderful depiction of sisterhood!
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Book 7)Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Book 7) by J. K. Rowling
Buy new: $20.46 / Used from: $1.89
Great read. She saved her best for last!
The Damascened BladeThe Damascened Blade by Barbara Cleverly
Buy new: $10.40 / Used from: $0.46
Yet another interesting novel by Cleverly--this one took me a bit of time to get into, but I enjoyed it once that happened. She must do an amazing amount of research to write these books, which take place in India during the time of the British Raj.
Eat, Drink, and Weigh Less: A Flexible and Delicious Way to Shrink Your Waist Without Going HungryEat, Drink, and Weigh Less: A Flexible and Delicious Way to Shrink Your Waist Without Going Hungry by Mollie Katzen
Buy new: $11.96 / Used from: $1.80
Interesting "eating plan" book (I refuse to say "diet"!) with some new scientific information and ideas. The 21-day eating plan and accompanying recipes sound mouth watering and delicious!
Waiting for Daisy: A Tale of Two Continents, Three Religions, Five Infertility Doctors, an Oscar, an Atomic Bomb, a Romantic Night and One Woman's Quest to Become a MotherWaiting for Daisy: A Tale of Two Continents, Three Religions, Five Infertility Doctors, an Oscar, an Atomic Bomb, a Romantic Night and One Woman's Quest to Become a Mother by Peggy Orenstein
Buy used from: $0.01
What a wonderful read! Orenstein accounts her ambivalence, as a feminist, about having a child, and then her difficult journey to get pregnant...through Clomid, miscarriages, IUI, IVF, and an egg donor...fortunately it has a happy ending. She is a compelling writer and I plan to read her other work too!
The Ivy ChroniclesThe Ivy Chronicles by Karen Quinn
Buy new: $11.20 / Used from: $0.01
Very light and shallow read, in the vein of "The Nanny Diaries," about a NYC rich woman who loses high-powered job and husband in one day and decides to become a consultant advising parents on how to get their tots into the city's finest private schools. Funny and entertaining, but not very deep!
Women of the Silk: A NovelWomen of the Silk: A Novel by Gail Tsukiyama
Buy new: $10.04 / Used from: $0.01
After recently hearing Tsukiyama speak in person, I decided to go back and read her novels in order. This is an excellent first novel, about the lives of women in China working in the silk trade. I loved it! Excellent story of women's friendship.
Suzanne's Diary for NicholasSuzanne's Diary for Nicholas by James Patterson
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01
What a poorly written book...sappy, unrealistic characters, and cheesy writing. The only reason I finished it was that I was trapped on an airplane!
The Early Birds: A Mother's Story for Our Times (Vintage)The Early Birds: A Mother's Story for Our Times (Vintage) by Jenny Minton
Buy new: $11.86 / Used from: $1.11
Story of IVF pregnancy and birth of the author's twins. As the mom of a preemie, I found the NICU experience interesting, but this book needed an editor. The author herself is an editor; maybe that's why no one else wanted to edit her text! She goes off into many different directions and comes across as privileged. But an interesting read nevertheless.
BackpackBackpack by Emily Barr
Buy used from: $0.01
A shallow, cocaine-addicted Londoner's mum dies and she plans to travel to Asia with her boyfriend. The boyfriend drops out, so she's on her own. Travelogue combined with murder mystery with romance thrown in. Difficult to get into at first, because of the unlikable protagonist, but I enjoyed reading about SE Asia. Contrived in the end, but I enjoyed it after the first 60 pages.
A Thousand Splendid SunsA Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini
Buy new: $17.13 / Used from: $0.08
Magnificent! I enjoyed this one even more than The Kite Runner. It was as difficult to read as The Kite Runner at times, but the story of women's friendship was beautiful. I loved it!!
Blindsided: Lifting a Life Above Illness: A Reluctant MemoirBlindsided: Lifting a Life Above Illness: A Reluctant Memoir by Richard M. Cohen
Buy new: $11.92 / Used from: $0.01
Bittersweet account of Meredith Viera's husband's 30-year struggle with multiple sclerosis. I learned a great deal about the disease and what it's like to cope with a chronic and at times debilitating illness.
Likely to Die (Alexandra Cooper Mysteries)Likely to Die (Alexandra Cooper Mysteries) by Linda Fairstein
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01
This is the second of Fairstein's books I've read, and I'm finding that I enjoy them more than Patricia Cornwell's because of the NYC setting. I just can't imagine how she finds time to write, given that she's also the head of NYC's sex crimes prosecution unit!
Point of Origin (Kay Scarpetta)Point of Origin (Kay Scarpetta) by Patricia Cornwell
Buy used from: $0.01
I listened to this on tape, and I had a horrible time staying interested in the story. I think that Patricia Cornwell really lost it about this point in her writing career. I finally gave up 1/3 of the way through the book, and I will not be reading any more of her books. I was getting sick of the characters and the plots!
Flower ChildrenFlower Children by Maxine Swann
Buy new: $1.93 / Used from: $0.01
It's easy to tell this novel began as a short story. It should have stayed as a short story. At first, I enjoyed the lyrical writing, and I was interested to see where the book led. But it didn't lead anywhere. There was no plot, and way too many characters. It was hard to follow the point of view, which kept changing with each chapter. I finished it, but only because it wasn't very long.
The Gospel of Food: Everything You Think You Know About Food Is WrongThe Gospel of Food: Everything You Think You Know About Food Is Wrong by Barry Glassner
Buy new: $5.54 / Used from: $3.17
Thought-provoking treatise about the food and restaurant industries, and the epidemic of obesity. Glassner demonstrates that it's easy to find a study that will back up just about any theory you want to prove, but the studies often contradict each other.
The Bondwoman's NarrativeThe Bondwoman's Narrative by Hannah Crafts
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $0.01
An African-American scholar unearthed and subsequently published the first known piece of fiction written by a former slave. 1/3 of the book is his story of research and publication, 1/3 is the novel itself, and 1/3 is footnotes. Very interesting!
Diary of a Mad BrideDiary of a Mad Bride by Laura Wolf
Buy new: $9.60 / Used from: $0.01
Light, fluffy book about a woman who swears she's not going to be a "mad bride," who succumbs to that panic and paranoia after all. It was the perfect book for my business trip to Seattle, since I got stuck in the airport for several hours! Shows the complete insanity of the bridal business.
Tokyo Year ZeroTokyo Year Zero by David Peace
Buy new: $24.00 / Used from: $0.61
I read 70 pages into it and then stopped. Highly stylistic, I really wanted to like it more, but I was finding it impossible to relate or get to know any of the characters. I finally decided that I wasn't getting enough out of the book to continue.
The Dirty Girls Social Club: A NovelThe Dirty Girls Social Club: A Novel by Alisa Valdes-Rodriguez
