A very nice example of the power of interdisciplinary thinking when it comes to contemplating a sustainable future.
Science and the Akashic Field: An Integral Theory of EverythingScience and the Akashic Field: An Integral Theory of Everything by Ervin Laszlo
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $6.95

A Theory of Everything: An Integral Vision for Business, Politics, Science and SpiritualityA Theory of Everything: An Integral Vision for Business, Politics, Science and Spirituality by Ken Wilber
Buy new: $10.85 / Used from: $3.88
Another "integral vision" - one of the best. Ken is one of my favorite writers. In for a penny, in for a pound as a rule with this guy. You really do need to read his entire corpus. When it comes to contemplating what the "nexgen" human really means, Ken is well ahead of the learning curve.

More interdisciplinary than integral, his book is nonetheless an excellent primer for the future and for how to rebuild America's economy. Well researched and well-argued. You just pray Obama has read it.

Revolutionary Wealth: How it will be created and how it will change our livesRevolutionary Wealth: How it will be created and how it will change our lives by Alvin Toffler
Buy new: $10.85 / Used from: $4.50
Two of my favorite futurists, they're guilty of less sins with this release than with prior tomes. Essential reading for those looking for the light at the end of the tunnel of today's global economic crisis.
The End of WorkThe End of Work by Jeremy Rifkin
Buy new: $12.44 / Used from: $1.70
Just going from the title, you can tell this is a man after my own heart. In an idea economy, it's perhaps time we do let go of the whole "wage slave" concept, realizing that freeing up people's time to come up with the ideas that will drive the economy is in everyone's best interests.

The Hydrogen EconomyThe Hydrogen Economy by Jeremy Rifkin

Friedman's book, Hot, Flat, and Crowded, is more up to date. But this is a classic you will still want to read.
The Biotech CenturyThe Biotech Century by Jeremy Rifkin

Another must-read.
Beyond Beef: The Rise and Fall of the Cattle Culture (Plume)Beyond Beef: The Rise and Fall of the Cattle Culture (Plume) by Jeremy Rifkin

This book, like most of the others, falls under the category of "know and understand the times you live in" at a very deep level, the macroshifts and trends shaping the future.
The Singularity Is Near: When Humans Transcend BiologyThe Singularity Is Near: When Humans Transcend Biology by Ray Kurzweil
Buy new: $13.00 / Used from: $8.70
Definitely the best of all his books, and the culmination of his thinking to date. The near future as it's driven and shaped by technology. If you want the biggest reality check in the least amount of pages, this is probably the book you want.
Awakening the Heroes Within: Twelve Archetypes to Help Us Find Ourselves and Transform Our WorldAwakening the Heroes Within: Twelve Archetypes to Help Us Find Ourselves and Transform Our World by Carol S. Pearson
Buy new: $13.68 / Used from: $2.47
This may be the single best book I've read (out of the thousands) as regards self-empowerment. (I have a Master's in Transpersonal Psychology.)
The Hero Within: Six Archetypes We Live ByThe Hero Within: Six Archetypes We Live By by Carol S. Pearson
Buy new: $10.79 / Used from: $2.60
Technically this is a smaller subset of archetypes than covered in Awakening the Heroes Within, all the same, the writing is quite good, and sometimes just changing the wording helps to free up insights.

Shambhala: The Sacred Path of the WarriorShambhala: The Sacred Path of the Warrior by Chogyam Trungpa
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $3.14
Trungpa is a Buddhist, and the Buddhists are quite good when it comes to looking at psychology from the perspective of self-transcendence, and at taking us from the human to the transhuman. One of three titles I highly recommend by him. A very lucid writer who is very accessible to the Western consciousness.
Cutting Through Spiritual Materialism (Shambhala Library)Cutting Through Spiritual Materialism (Shambhala Library) by Chogyam Trungpa

Diamond Heart, Book One: Elements of the Real in Man (The Diamond Heart Series) (Bk.1)Diamond Heart, Book One: Elements of the Real in Man (The Diamond Heart Series) (Bk.1) by A. H. Almaas
Buy new: $12.89 / Used from: $4.46
I strongly recommend everything by this author. But the Diamond Heart series is the most accessible. After that, I would venture into the Diamond Mind series. Gurdjieff favored "will" as the transformative vehicle par excellence of the many qualities of essence. Almaas clearly prefers "truth" as the aspect of essence that is most liberating.
A Course in Miracles, Text, Workbook for Students and Manual for TeachersA Course in Miracles, Text, Workbook for Students and Manual for Teachers by Foundation for Inner Peace
Buy used from: $33.95
For those pondering integration of "the many I's" of fragmented ego-consciousness who are of a Christian bent, I highly recommend this. For the non-denominational, and even for those of a Buddhist, Taoist, or Sufi persuasion - there is nothing to offend here. This book is the best I've encountered for "putting Ego in its place."

Integral Yoga: Sri Aurobindo's Teaching & Method of PracticeIntegral Yoga: Sri Aurobindo's Teaching & Method of Practice by Aurobindo

A much easier and breezier read than The Life Divine, which is also highly recommended.

The End of the Nation State: The Rise of Regional EconomiesThe End of the Nation State: The Rise of Regional Economies by Kenichi Ohmae
Buy new: $15.25 / Used from: $0.08
You would do well to read all of Ohmae. He is one of the best of the "big picture" people working within the business world today. His trend forecasting tends to be spot on.
Creativity: Unleashing the Forces Within (Osho, Insights for a New Way of Living.)Creativity: Unleashing the Forces Within (Osho, Insights for a New Way of Living.) by Osho
Buy new: $10.04 / Used from: $3.24
Osho would appear to be made of the same soul-stuff as Wilber. Both realized early on the necessity of merging Eastern and Western thinking. All of his titles are worthwhile, this is one of my favorites.
