![]() | A Field Guide to Edible Wild Plants: Eastern and central North America (Peterson Field Guide Series) by Lee Allen Peterson
Buy new: $12.35 / Used from: $10.91 I use this book a lot, or did before I developed a good grasp of edible plants. It has a guide to plant parts in the front. This is a field guide, not a how to book.

![]() | A Field Guide to Medicinal Plants and Herbs: Of Eastern and Central North America (Peterson Field Guide Series) by James A. Duke
Buy new: $12.35 / Used from: $10.00 My all time favorite field guide on medicinal plants and herbs for the east coast. Not as systematic as Newcomb's guides but I return to it. Over 300 color photos and identification for 500 plants.

![]() | A Field Guide to Venomous Animals and Poisonous Plants: North America North of Mexico (Peterson Field Guide Series) by Roger Caras
Buy new: $11.29 / Used from: $10.99 Before you go picking edible plants- especially anything that looks vaguely like Queen Anne's Lace- you need to know what is dangerous. Most so-called poisonous plants are merely emetic- they make you vomit. But there are a handful of deadly ones (aside from mushrooms) and you need to know them. Be aware that even edible or medicinal plants can have poisonous parts.

![]() | Botany in a Day: Thomas J. Elpel's Herbal Field Guide to Plant Families, 4th Ed. by Thomas J. Elpel
Buy used from: $26.00 This is a general book, but every wildcrafter should have a basic vocabulary of plant parts, know how plants are organized and such. Think I'm kidding? I have had people on herb walks who couldn't distinguish poison ivy from clover after looking at them because all they could see were three part leaves.

![]() | A Field Guide to Wildflowers : Northeastern and North-Central North America (Peterson Field Guides) by Margaret McKenny
Buy new: $12.92 / Used from: $5.99 Once you start learning edible and medicinal plants, you will learn that many are not identified as such, so you will want a good field guide to wildflowers.
|
![]() | A Field Guide to Pacific States Wildflowers: Washington, Oregon, California and adjacent areas (Peterson Field Guides) by Theodore F. Niehaus
Buy new: $12.92 / Used from: $1.00 This is the wildflower field guide for the west coast.
|
![]() | A Field Guide to Western Medicinal Plants and Herbs by Christopher Hobbs
Buy new: $14.96 / Used from: $10.94 Here is the West Coast version of the Duke field guide above. Also not a how to book.
|
![]() | Stalking The Wild Asparagus by Euell Gibbons
Buy new: $11.90 / Used from: $9.62 Euell Gibbons tells you what to do with your foods, but is not a field guide (as I learned to my chagrin when I tried to cook with cattail pollen but got the fuzz by mistake because I was too inexperienced to know the difference.) Folksy and not comprehensive. Written with a love of plants.
|
![]() | The Complete Medicinal Herbal: A Practical Guide to the Healing Properties of Herbs, with More Than 250 Remedies for Common Ailments by Penelope Ody
Buy used from: $14.99 Penelope Ody is British, but she gives clear directions in this well-illustrated book, the American edition of which is available used quite cheaply.
|
![]() | Herbal Preparations and Natural Therapies: Creating and Using a Home Herbal Medicine Chest by Debra Nuzzi
Buy used from: $25.00 Learning to make herbal medicines is a long journey, but there is no reason why not to start. It is out of print, but I really like Debra Nuzzi's book which gives clear instructions and has a list of optimum alcohol contents for tinctures of various plants.
|
![]() | Tom Brown's Guide to Wild Edible and Medicinal Plants (Field Guide) by Tom Brown
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $8.00 I love Tom Brown's books. This one is not particularly useful in the field, but it gives you great stories. Too bad it doesn't come illustrated.
|
![]() | Field Guide to Edible Wild Plants by Bradford Angier
Buy new: $13.57 / Used from: $2.72 I have a soft spot in my heart for Bradford Angier whose Wildwood Wisdom started me off as a child. This is his field guide, more folksy and less systematic and just fun to read.
|
![]() | The Herbal Medicine-Maker's Handbook: A Home Manual by James Green
Buy new: $15.61 / Used from: $13.61 James Green gives clear directions on making a variety of herbal medicines. I don't like the organization as well as Nuzzi's book, but it is quite useful and more available.
|
![]() | Stalking The Healthful Herbs by Euell Gibbons
Buy new: $11.90 / Used from: $7.61 Tells you about how herbs are used, but you will need a field guide to identify them. Still a great introduction.
|
![]() | A Field Guide to Mushrooms: North America (Peterson Field Guide Series) by Kent H. McKnight
Buy new: $14.28 / Used from: $9.98 You do NOT want to collect mushrooms learning about them from a book, but you can start to learn. You need to find an experienced local guide before you try eating mushrooms, learn to do spore prints and learn which varieties have few poisonous look alikes.
|
![]() | Mushrooms Demystified by David Arora
Buy new: $26.37 / Used from: $25.00 I think this book is the best of many many mushroom guides I have, but it really is too big to cart around in the field, which is a problem. Never collect mushrooms just based on books and always find books that have local species- the mushroom kingdom is rife with look alikes.
|
![]() | Mushroom Cultivator: A Practical Guide to Growing Mushrooms at Home by Paul Stamets
Buy new: $23.07 / Used from: $19.70 If you like mushrooms and can create a dark humid place to grow them, this book will show you a safer way to find mushrooms.
