Product Description

In spring of 2000, the largest moving object ever seen on our planet began its voyage - so grand in scale it changed the earth’s rotation as it moved. Dubbed Godzilla by scientists, it had enough fresh water to supply the United States with all of its water needs for years.

A special team from the National Geographic Society and the New England Aquarium are the first to employ a bold new technological approach at exploring above, below and within the ice.

To get there they follow in the footsteps of early explorers, traversing the most violent seas on earth. The journey takes weeks, and once there, they must contend with the inhospitable nature of life at the bottom of the world.

Their journey takes them to the edge of human endurance and beyond the boundaries of mankind’s experience. For the first time, explorers physically dive inside icebergs. Their attempts to explore lead them to a new undiscovered world.

They confront life and death decisions every day. Weaving their way through the treacherous pack ice - and well beyond the range of rescue - they make a dangerous flight in the spirit of discovery. But despite the natural beauty that captivates them, they are in a race to escape the clutches of the ice.

How will they get out?

Editorial Reviews

From the Actor
The Ice Island expedition gave our team the opportunity to test some remarkable new technology. Wes Skiles brought the beauty of High Definition cinematography to the film, using it in some of the most extreme environments one can imagine. I brought advanced closed-circuit rebreathers to the diving operations that allowed us to physically penetrate caves inside of massive, moving icebergs. It was some of the most challenging and dangerous diving ever conducted, and bringing home the images in the glory of HD detail was something that will not likely be repeated! – Jill Heinerth, Producer/Exploration Diver

His primary goal is to continue work in the realm of entertaining educational films focused on the earth’s most important resource, water.

Over the past decade Wes has successfully filmed where no one has before. His unstoppable spirit of adventure has led him to exotic destinations and fantastic voyages. At ease with both motion and still photography he divides his time working on assignment for National Geographic Magazine and with television’s top producers of science, adventure and natural history programming.

As evidenced by his feature in the National Geographic Magazine on the North Florida Springs, and his award-winning film for A&E New Explorers program "Polluting the Fountain of Youth" Wes is able to utilize stunning visual imagery to convey the subtle beauty of Florida’s landscape. His enthusiastic story-telling style makes science exciting and accessible and always provides the audience with an intimate perspective and understanding of the subjects he films.

Outside of the world of film-making, Wes is deeply involved as a volunteer protecting the environmental resources of his Florida home. He leads field trips for citizens and government officials to learn about Florida springs and spends a lot of time in local schools teaching kids about how they can protect water resources. His passion for the environment permeates his life from his occupation to his avocation.

Customer Reviews

Antartica in HD5
Wes Skiles and a team of scientist and explorers embark on a long journey to Antartica to explore an iceberg named Godzilla, because of its size. Its so big that (fresh water) that it could supply the US with drinking water for years. Wes films the whole thing in HD, so the color, depth, and clarity is outstanding on this DVD. THey explore the icebergs, above and below, and encounter many marine mammals, like seals, and penguins also. If you liked the Hidden Rivers of Florida and the River Returns DVDs, you will like this one also. You cant go wrong with Wes Skiles and his Karst production works. I highly recommend this dvd to any diver, or nature lover....

Good job Wes5
It takes a lot of courage to go dive into in iceberg, something that I would never do. But this team of divers got an extraordinary look into some big ice, and it seems some extraordinary luck as well. This is an enjoyable doc, an educational adventure.

not a dive documentary1
There are maybe 6 to 7 minutes (tops) of dive footage in this entire documentary. I feel like this movie is marketed as a diver documentary, but the movie is mostly about how hard it is to get to Antarctica. The main question of the film is "Are the changes seen at the edge of Antarctic ice shelves a result of global warming, or just a natural cycle?" They leave without an answer.
