This is great if you have the hardware.4
If you have the hardware, the setup takes a couple of minutes. If you do not have the hardware, the installation CD has a neat little diagnostic program that will display what hardware, software or setup you need.

(First the hardware) You are going to have to have a kick butt computer to run this thing. Please check the manufacture web site for minimum requirements. Make sure your graphics card supports HDCP (aka High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection). I believe all HDTV's support HDCP. If the TV you are using does not support HDCP, this maybe a problem in watching HD on this TV.

(Second the software) Make sure all drivers are up to date and you check with the manufacture web site for their list. The HD-DVD drive comes with CyberLink's PowerDVD. This I believe is top of the line HD-DVD player software.

(Third the setup). If you try to connect an HDMI or DVI cable while the VGA cable is connected, you will not be able to view the HD movie in HD. This security feature does not make sense. I believe it is part of HDCP.

I strongly believe this is for people who want an HTPC (aka Home Theater Computer). There are many online forumns that talk about the HTPC and HD-DVD setup. I hope HTPC are more popular in the future. This gives the most control to the viewers.

Drive still works great. I wish I could give this 5 stars now. The drive is very durable.

It plays HD-DVD, DVD, CD, but not Blue-ray.5
Since HD-DVD is obsolete now so HP has discuntinued this model. But otherwise this works as expected. I got it in very cheap price from amazon.com
