Average customer review:We have been using this living book all year as one of the core books for our American History Studies. I cannot say enough good things about this book.
It is a living book which takes you inside the lives of the pioneer families as they set sail for the new world, set out for the west by wagon and water, encounter Indian tribes and much more. Learn about daily lives of the pioneer men, women, and children. Learn how they made butter, cloth and soap. See how they used open fires and what a typical school day was like for young children.
The stories are very interesting and always emphasize God's provisions.
Can be used as a fun read aloud to accompany any early American History study.
Product Description
The stories that follow will present students with a uniquely rewarding study of early American history and culture. Young people will be exposed to more than a dry, narrow study of major political and military events from the annals of our country's history. They will learn about the growth and development of the United States from the perspective of those who lived though this time. This book is made up of stories about boys and girls who lived in different places and times in our country. These stories help children to understand that God's gifts of faith, courage and determination are what transformed our early pioneers into patriots.

Great For Teaching American History!
I used this book as a part of my daughter's third-grade home schooling curriculum. When I first laid eyes on it, I thought, "FINALLY! Someone has written a history book as it should have been written-not just a collection of dry facts and dates, but written as though it involved real people!"
This book gives accurate historical facts of American history (from a Christian perspective), but includes short fictional stories about families who may have existed in the early, forming years of the United States. These interesting and entertaining fictional stories contain historical facts and truths about how American pioneers and patriots worked, travelled, lived and played. Each story features children, who hold children's interest.
Through these tales, my daughter was able to quickly learn and appreciate how difficult it was for the founders of our country-and it gave me a new appreciation as well!
History need not be dry and boring, written in passive tense without feeling, emotion or spirit. I feel more "history books" should be written this way. There is no reason to bore young readers to death and leaving them with a bad taste for history. Had I had more books like this when I was growing up, perhaps I would have enjoyed these courses more and done better in them than I did.
BRAVO to Christian Liberty Press for daring to try something new and for helping bring "history" to life!
Too much fiction
I love the concept of historical fiction, but this book has a little too much fiction. For each section, there is a fictional story, using fictional characters, set in a specific time period/event. This book focuses too much on the fictional accounts. It didn't hold my kids' attention. Telling the real stories of what happened, in a winsome way, would be more interesting.
Great details!
I found this book to have an incredible amount of detailed information on the way early Americans lived. My children and I especially liked the informational pages on "How Butter Was Made", "How Pioneer Lived in Covered Wagons" and "How People Lived on Sailing Ships", among many others. Well illustrated and contains many great maps. We really enjoyed this book as part of our homeschooling history library.
