A newly updated edition of bestselling author Harriet Roth’s classic low-cholesterol cookbook
Since Harriet Roth’s classic cookbook was first published in 1991, awareness and concern over cholesterol levels has continued to grow. This revised and up-to-date edition contains the latest nutritional information on statins and other cholesterol-lowering treatments, trans fats and other dietary research, as well as more than 30 brand-new, delicious low-fat and low-cholesterol recipes and current product lists. Delectable reader favorites are still on the menu, including Orange-glazed Cornish Hens, Cajun Blackened Redfish, and the Chocoholic’s Chocolate Cake. Harriet Roth was making thirty-minute-or-less meals long before Rachael Ray got a television deal, and she serves up over 250 easy-to-prepare, healthy, gourmet recipes for breakfast, brunch, lunch, appetizers, dinner, and dessert. Bon appétit!

Editorial Reviews
From Publishers Weekly
Formerly director of the Pritikin Longevity Center Cooking School, Roth admits that she, like many other gourmet cooks, at one time frequently cooked with large quantities of animal protein, butter, cream and eggs--until her husband was diagnosed as having a serious coronary condition. The author of Deliciously Low: The Gourmet Guide to Low - Sodium, Low-Fat, Low - Cholesterol, Low-Sugar Cooking here presents easy-to-understand information about cholesterol and how to control its presence in one's diet. Also discussed are dietary fiber and how this affects cholesterol; weight reduction and maintenance; and cholesterol-lowering drugs sometimes prescribed when dieting proves insufficient. While offering little new information on these matters, Roth stresses the importance of adopting healthful habits and carefully reading food labels to achieve one's goals. Providing more than 250 recipes and 200 meal plans, she shows, moreover, that low-cholesterol cooking need not be uninspired. Also provided are calorie and nutrition tables of commonly used foods, but recipes do not include nutritional analyses or calorie counts.

From Library Journal
Another low-cholesterol cookbook, this one from a nutritionist, Pritikin advisor, and author of several other health-conscious cookbooks. This includes background on health and nutrition, an appendix full of charts, a two-week diet plan for quick results, and hundreds of low-fat, low-cholesterol, and low-sodium recipes. The recipes are somewhat less sophisticated than those in Lynn Fischer & W. Virgil Brown's The Fischer/Brown Low-Cholesterol Gourmet ( LJ 12/88) and Anne Lindsay's The Low-Cholesterol Gourmet ( LJ 3/15/89), but this is nevertheless a good addition to a growing category.

Complete information with outstanding recipes
This book offers you the opportunity to change your eating style, understand why and lose weight in the process. My husband and I followed Harriet's lifestyle of eating suggestions and were surprised at the quality and tastefulness of the receipes. The added bonus was an ease in losing 34 lbs(my husband) and 17 lbs (me). The important part for us is the continuation in our pleasure in following this new lifestyle of eating and looking so great!
Good resource for cholesterol info, diet plans & recipes
After looking at several different books aimed at helping people reduce their cholesterol, this is my favorite thus far. It has an introductory section on cholesterol and how it affects you -- enough info if you are uninformed but not over the top with the science of it. Then Roth has a "jump start" diet plan that I like very much so far -- breakfasts are pretty much set, but the lunches and dinners are flexible to adjust for the types of veggies and fruits you personally like, as do the snacks. It is easy to follow and reasonable in what it is asking you to do/change for the two weeks Roth recommends that you are on it. This in particular made the book stand out from other books of this type. Then Roth features a "maintenance" diet that is meant to be a long-term lifestyle change for a low-fat, low-cholesterol diet. It too is reasonable. Both sections are accompanied by recipes. (At this point, I have only tried the muffin recipe, which is great).
And let me say now that the thought of all of the oat bran and oat meal may seem overwhelming, but the portion sizes might surprise you, and will, most likely, fill you up. The muffins Roth recommends are excellent (although I added a little more applesauce because they were a little dry for me). I also found that the muffin recipe bakes up fine when I put it in two muffin loaf pans - I just cut each loaf so that I have the 12 portions the recipe makes. (Also makes them easier to freeze, as they are flat pieces).
In summary, I have read multiple books on lowering cholesterol and low-cholesterol diets, and this is my favorite thus far. I actually got it from my library, but like it so much that I am purchasing. Contains good diet plans, recipes, and solid advice. A keeper!
filled with new information, easy to use resulting in better health
I have been using Harriet Roth's books for a long time, now this one only builds and updates her previous books. It has been very helpful to me to use these new recipes, giving my family a whole new selection of meals that are in keeping with all the new nutritional information available today.
I was pleased to hear about this new and updated book after my family and I have benefited so much from using her other books. The recipes use all the new products that are available today as well as eliminating trans fats and saturated fats.
