About the Author
Lora Brown Wilder, Sc.D., M.S., R.D., a registered dietitian, received her M.S. in nutrition from the University of Maryland and her Sc.D. in public health from Johns Hopkins University. She is currently Assistant Professor, Department of Medicine, at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and is also affiliated with the United States Department of Agriculture and the University of Maryland's Department of Nutrition and Food Science. Dr. Wilder has served on various advisory committees related to nutrition, including committees at the American Heart Association and the National Institutes of Health, and helped set up the first Johns Hopkins Preventive Cardiology Program. In her research, Dr. Wilder has studied the effects of coffee on fatty acids and investigated behavioral strategies to reduce coronary risk factors. Most recently, her research has been in the area of dietary assessment methodology. She contributed to Nutritional Management: The Johns Hopkins Handbook, and her research has been published in Circulation, The American Journal of Medicine, and the Journal of the American Medical Association. Lawrence J. Cheskin, M.D., graduated from Dartmouth Medical School and completed a fellowship in gastroenterology at Yale-New Haven Hospital. Currently, he is Associate Professor of International Health and Human Nutrition at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health with a joint appointment at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Dr. Cheskin is also Director of the Johns Hopkins Weight Management Center. In his research, Dr. Cheskin has studied the effects of medications on body weight, the gastrointestinal effects of olestra, how cigarette smoking relates to dieting and body weight, and the effectiveness of lifestyle changes in weight loss and weight maintenance.
