Brooks’ novel is based on the Sarajevo Haggadah. Since little is known of the book’s history, Brooks can imagine those who risked their lives throughout history to insure the survival of this book. The Haggadah, used at a Passover Seder, tells the story of the Jews escape from Egypt--to freedom. Brooks spins a wonderful tale about the escape of this old book from those who would destroy it.

Like Carlos Castaneda--who wrote the forward for this book--Taisha Abelar meets Don Juan (but under another name) and begins learning the basic principles of sorcery. This is a very honest and practical book about Taisha's doubts, training, and ultimate understanding of what's required to step outside the boundaries of our everyday perception of the world.

This book is both an excellent novel and a clear presentation of the first battles after America's entry into World War II. Beginning with Gods and Generals (1996)and Last Full Measure (1998) Shaara has been quite prolific. Told in part through the viewpoints of Eisenhower and Rommel, the Rising Tide is another treat for students of history and compelling novels.
