They, They, They Are The Best!5
I have waited for years to hear the songs the Ames Bros. performed in the early part of their career. I was very familiar with their later works and always loved what I heard. This 2 CD set is everything I had hoped for and more. I happen to believe that the Ames Bros. were the finest group of their time, and this compilation bears that out. If you like the Ames Bros., you owe it to yourself to have "They They, They Are The Ones."

Great songs...the audio needs improvement3
I'm a huge Ames Brothers fan, and in the few short years I have collected their music (i'm 21 now), I've gained quite a collection. This 2-cd set was released primarily for all of the UK fans who never had a chance to get copies of the early Decca and Coral records that the Ames brothers cut (some with Russ Morgan, or Monica Lewis). However, the audio quality leaves something to be desired, especially for someone like myself who can still pick out all of the audible defects. First of all, the set used the CEDAR noise reduction system. This means that all of the life was sucked out of the recordings to try to remove as much of the surface noise from old shellac 78 rpm disc dubs as possible. Sure, the noise is no longer there, but some elements of the songs are missing too because they were taken out with the noise reduction. Now, if you've never heard these recordings, this set is a great starter collection, but buying the old American 78's (and in 95% of the cases 45 rpm pressings exist too), and listening to them with the background noise intact is more enjoyable to me. Now, I know that many people will disagree with me and say that the sound is fine on these cds, but I personally felt Jasmine could've done better if they had better sources and more professional remastering equipment, but when you're putting out cds of music that is now in the public domain, record companies won't allow you to access their original master tapes for free anyhow and disc dubs are all you have.

I think Universal needs to release more cds on the Ames Brothers, as the only Coral material they legitimately issued in one collection has been a Varese Sarabande label cd that is now out of print, but still a great collection of music anyhow. If they had issued a set like this Jasmine set from the original master tapes and laquer discs, I would've been much happier as I know the sound would've been better. I hate to settle for this cd, but it appears to be selling well as it is, which should be a hint to Universal to get whatever music by the Ames brothers out that they can before it's too late and every single fan ends up with this cd set (though many would surely buy a Universal ames brothers set like this if it were to become available).

While there are many songs on here you'll likely never find elsewhere, I would still recommend hunting down the original records instead of torturing your ears with this lifeless cd set. If you turn the bass up on these recordings they dont sound too horrible, but then again, most older fans would likely never know the difference unless given a set of these recordings from the master tapes to compare with. C'mon Universal, give the fans what they deserve and squash companies like this who are only putting out product that has become public domain in the UK because they can now.

5 stars for the songs, 1 star for the sound quality...3 stars overall, and that is what this set deserves, in my opinion. At the very least, there isn't a song on this set that I wouldn't listen to if I had it from a better source on cd (and until then, my original records will do, as i have all but 5 of these tunes on 78, 45, cd and lp already).

My List of Demands3
Some too-often recorded songs are included in this package and sent me as a kid racing to the rhythm and blues and rock and roll that was emerging. If they ever have a compilation with "My Cup Runneth Over", "It Only Hurts For a Little While", "You, You, You", "Man With the Banjo", "Moments to Remember" (the Four Lads notwithstanding), "Naughty Lady of Shady Lane" and "String Along" perhaps with "Tammy" thrown in, somebody call me. I don't want to sit and listen to my arteries harden and to songs dozens of people in the 50s recorded. Your folks didn't leave the Ukraine for this, guys.
