Editorial Reviews

Album Description
Roy Hamilton rose to fame in the mid-1950's with big ballad hits like 'You'll Never Walk Alone', 'Hurt', and the seminal version of 'Unchained Melody', all sung with his warm, powerful, vibrant baritone voice, then moved into the R&B era with the rocking "Don't Let Go" the gospel-inspired 'You Can Have Her', and 'I'm Gonna Sit Right Down and Cry', covered by Elvis Presley. With this CD, Shout has gathered a collection of the cream of Roy's Epic tracks in the R&B style, both ballads and beat, to put a new, soulful perspective on the recordings of this great singer who they called "The Golden Boy" - Essential Roy Hamilton Epic recordings, focus on his R&B stylings. All material unavailable for many years. Shout label full page advert in next issue of In The Basement magazine.

Customer Reviews

An orthodox balladeer meets R&B5
During the stay at the corporate Epic, Roy Hamilton left many orchestrated ballads and also some R&B sides. As for R&B fans like me, this compilation should be welcome because it is compiled in a R&B fan's point of view. Orchestrated R&B sound spawned by the conservative Epic is well suited to Roy Hamilton's rich baritone voice with a smooth vibrato. Especially his rockabilly sides are so cool. Such adult arrangements cannot be found so often in other R&B or R&R tunes. If you love hard-edged old school R&B, his sides should not suit you. If you listen a little more patiently, you can find the bud of the gospel-influenced Soul in him.

Don't Let Go5
I brought this CD for my Mother for Xmas. She is very thrilled and enjoy listening to Roy Hamilton. It brings memories back of my Father when they were younger.

Elvis's lesser known inspiration5
Most serious music fans will know of the reputed influence Dean Martin had on Elvis but maybe don't know of the huge influence Roy Hamilton had.If Roy Hamilton influenced Elvis then by extention he's influenced everyone who followed. This superb compilation goes a long way to showing us why he deserves our respect and why its time he was remembered again.

Highlights include (and there are many) the opener Don't Let Go a great rockin' r&b foottapper, Hurt (later a hit for Timi Yuri)which shows off his amazing voice as does his definitive version of You'll Never Walk Alone (listen to Elvis's version and the phrasing is almost exactly the same, nuff said!) and the joyful gospel swing of Jungle Fever.

All in this is a great salute to someone who is genuinely a significant part of musics past.
