Originals, But Too Many Are Missing3
I'm an oldies DJ in New England, and I'd like to correct a misimpression offered by the sole reviewer posted here (2/25/04). The tracks on this CD are indeed original recordings--not recuts. You do need to watch out for recuts with the Platters--but not here. Problem is, though it does contain all the biggest Platters' hits, virtually all the lesser hits--those that peaked lower than #12 on the Billboard charts--are omitted in favor of some odd selections. You may be interested in hearing the Platters' rendition of "Sixteen Tons" (I wasn't), but where's 1959's "Enchanted?" Some lovely non-top-10 hits are sacrificed, and some pretty iffy material included. A better, more complete collection can be found elsewhere. But if you're looking for original recordings of the group's very biggest hits, this CD is perfectly adequate.

Disappointed1
This CD is not what I expected. I admit I am a novice at purchasing CDs over the internet, but I didn't realize that this was a remake and never would have bought it if I had known. The packaging and information was misleading. It definitely does not have the great sounds of the original Platters.

Wonderful Selection.5
I first became aware of The Platters in the mid to late 50s. They appeared at just about the same time that Rock 'n' Roll was getting underway. But they weren't rock 'n' roll. I know, I know, they're in the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame, but they don't really belong there. They're not Rhythm and Blues either. I know, they've topped the R&B charts too, many times. They don't fit doo wop, either. However the Platters have great appeal to people who like R 'n' R, R&B and doo wop, that's for sure. No, The Platters are a stand-alone, one-of-a-kind vocal group. They were largely created and brilliantly maintained by Buck Ram, one of America's greatest song writers of the 20th century. OK, it's just my opinion and you don't have to take it seriously. You can think of the Platters as a R 'n' R group, if you like. In any case, The Platters presented brilliantly crafted pop music. The singing and arrangements were exquisite. The song writing was absolutely first rate. Some of the covers of classic songs are the best ever made. This is rock 'n' roll? Not in my opinion, and my favorite music genre is rock 'n' roll. The Platters are The Platters. Enough said. They don't belong anywhere. They belong everywhere.

The Platters music probably will last forever. "Only You," "The Great Pretender," "You've Got The Magic Touch" and "My Prayer" were enormous 50s hits and I still hear them on the radio now and then. Plus, they turned out all kinds of wonderful cover versions of old classic songs. Well, here's a CD that pretty well wraps things up, or is a good place to start, in my opinion. It's still in print, and plenty of used copies are available in one form or another. The sound quality on this CD is excellent. It's a wonderful selection of classic Platters' songs. Just don't label it as rock 'n' roll.
