Editorial Reviews

Album Description
Don Gibson is an original, often overlooked. There's so much more to his music than the hits everyone knows. He was one of the most sophisticated writers and singers in country music. This is a collection of the original recordings from 1949 thru 1960, his early sides and his biggest hits, on the Mercury, Columbia, MGM labels, as well as his early recordings for RCA.

Customer Reviews

The overall greatest ever5
Don Gibson was the best. But I don't think he ever knew it. The interviewer in the book included with this box set stated that he was absolutely "a prince of a man." I wish that everyone would purchase this box set and the other 2 following and listen to the other songs he wrote and recorded. The ones that didn't make the #1 spots, because whoever did those ratiings (the public?, judges?) well, whoever it was, didn't listen to all of his music or there would have been many more #1's. I reviewed this last night, however, it was so long, apparently it didn't qualify so I thought I would just thumbnail it tonight just to get the message across. I wish he could finally have what he deserved while he was alive. And that would be recognition for being a genius and master of words, regardless of his comment that he didn't know words well. I disagree with him. He was a master at putting (simple??) words on paper and to music. And he put so much feeling into his singing. That voice was as amazing as his picking the guitar was. And it's a shame that the Country Music Hall of Fame took so many years to induct him. I am hoping that someone somewhere can find some old film of him performing at the Opry or on some stage and transfer them to DVD. I loved watching him especially picking that guitar.
