Kenny Rogers: The Journey is a solid and engaging account of Rogers' lengthy career in music, certain to teach any viewer something they didn't know about the many chapters in the superstar's life as an artist. A documentary, The Journey is a mix of concert footage (most of it archival) and interviews with Rogers, as well as numerous insights from key people in his history of making hit records. The overall message is that Rogers has been a class act from the very beginning, certain of his work ethic as well as his talent and ability to choose the right collaborators. High points include Rogers' reunion with the Bobby Doyle Three, the jazz-vocal group he joined right out of high school, and a smooth duet with Willie Nelson on Irving Berlin's "Blue Skies" (a performance in which Rogers resurrects his old skills playing upright bass). There's a lot of discussion about Rogers' instincts for finding great duet partners of the female variety: Dottie West, Kim Carnes, Dolly Parton, and even Sheena Easton (who, apparently, didn't get along with Rogers too well). Various insights about the early stages of Rogers' musical evolution are very interesting, especially his comments about the pop-folk group the New Christy Minstrels proving too restricting, giving rise to Rogers' soft-rock band the First Edition, followed by a solo career he feared would become "too country" with his smash hit, "Lucille." Also a lot of fun: Lionel Richie's self-effacing account of producing Rogers' successful attempt at a country-R&B crossover, "Lady." --Tom Keogh

This is a wonderful surprise!5
I liked Kenny when he was with the First Edition. So when I heard that the First Edition appeared on this DVD I decided to check it out. I absolutely love it. There are clips from his earlier career right up to the present. There are people like Lionel Ritchie and Mickey Jones giving commentary. There are a few First Edition Clips and his duets with the ladies like Dolly Parton and Sheena Easton.

I highly recommend this DVD and the quality is high. Thanks Amazon!

The Journey To His Concerts Now4
Kenny Rogers provides many hits to his fans that support him unconditionally. He also knows how to go into different genres of music which he thinks will be interesting to his fans and maybe just a casual listener tired of hearing "The Gambler" all the time. It can get tiring hearing that song and even "Lady", which is very likely his anthem. Rogers seems to know this and nearly touches upon that very thought. You can put out a concert video of 23 songs, then run the credits, close up the show to the home audience with a behind-scenes-look for good measure. That's not what's done here. It would have been nice to see what we click on where the menu screen says, "PLAY CONCERT". What is instead given is an easy to understand documentary with additional features and the documentary happens to have concert footage that no one possibly has ever seen.
Kenny Rogers is interviewed and so is his long time manager. Several producers, arrangers, songwriters are called upon to comment on Rogers' career. It's surprising to hear that Sheena Easton and Rogers did not get along very well for their hit, "We've Got Tonight". Their performance is shone and it is in his concert. Looking closely we can almost see them going through the motions to pretend they have a rapport that's positive. Kim Carnes is featured on the beautiful, "Don't Fall In Love With A Dreamer". (In 1999 Carnes and Rogers revitalized their hit for a European album release, "After Dark".) We see Rogers play upright Bass. We see "Islands In The Stream" performed. Willie Nelson and Rogers duet on an Irving Berlin classic. A member of The First Edition, Rogers' band before going solo, has a few spots included in this DVD. Lionel Richie, writer of "Lady", sheds humor from his working with Rogers. Several songs from Rogers' new and impressive, hot-selling country album (in concert or music video form) show the viewer that "The Gambler" himself has plenty of intelligent and creative hands he's thinking to play since he is "The Greatest". Many will know what is meant by that.

Good Dvd for fans3
Great dvd, and gives you a good insite into the career of the man himself, as well as some great songs.
