Storm Front (The Dresden Files, Book 1)Storm Front (The Dresden Files, Book 1) by Jim Butcher
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.98
They originally published these books with generic covers. But then put this mysterious ZZ Top groupie (sans beard) on the cover. … and it made all the difference.
Liberal Fascism: The Secret History of the American Left, From Mussolini to the Politics of ChangeLiberal Fascism: The Secret History of the American Left, From Mussolini to the Politics of Change by Jonah Goldberg
Buy new: $11.56 / Used from: $4.48
This is the perfect cover—you look at it and you know the book. Remember that “smiley-face fascism” was an expression coined by George Carlin.
AMERICA'S REAL WARAMERICA'S REAL WAR by Rabbi Daniel Lapin
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $12.58
This is another cover that evokes yellow journalism. Again, by looking at the cover, you get a feel for R. Lapin’s take on the culture war. The tug-o-war with the flag makes this book #2 after “Liberal Fascism.”
Spreading Misandry: The Teaching of Contempt for Men in Popular CultureSpreading Misandry: The Teaching of Contempt for Men in Popular Culture by Paul Nathanson
Buy new: $22.45 / Used from: $5.95
The cover depicts a victim of male-bashing, or misandry. It is so gruesome you can’t keep your eyes off of it.
Legalizing Misandry: From Public Shame to Systemic Discrimination Against MenLegalizing Misandry: From Public Shame to Systemic Discrimination Against Men by Paul Nathanson
Buy new: $31.96 / Used from: $30.69
This is how you do good continuity between books. They used a different angle from the same session. So it looks like the first gruesome cover, but not exactly. Red, then Blue—just like the Beatles's albums.
Space CadetSpace Cadet by Robert A. Heinlein
Buy used from: $0.01
I loved this cover as a teenager. You see the Mercury-era astronaut in tin-foil, with the 2001: Space Odyssey helmet. But there is no face, so you put your own face into the spacesuit. He is caught mid-step, like we are watching, and admiring him—as we did with Neal Armstrong.
EnchantmentEnchantment by Orson Scott Card
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $6.85
This is a good example of a cover that bent the book in the wrong direction. I read the first chapter online, so was sold on the book. But the cover looks girly. It is really a male fairy-tale—a guy book. So sales were lost. You can put a new cover on, with Harrison Ford, or Frodo.
The SilmarillionThe Silmarillion by J. R. R. Tolkien
Buy used from: $7.49
This is a dramatic picture, depicting the fall of Numenor (Atlantis). Remember the newspaper pictures the day after 9/11? With the fireballs coming out of the World Trade Center? This cover has the same effect. Newer covers show the three silmarili—not as dramatic, but more applicable.
Gray Lensman (The Lensman Series, Book 4)Gray Lensman (The Lensman Series, Book 4) by Edward E. Smith
Buy used from: $10.19
I love the retro-covers that are now in vogue. This one, taken from the original pulp magazine, conveys old-school manliness. But you get a sense of dignity, honor and courage. It also shows that Brendan Fraser could be Kimball Kinnison.
Cries of The HeartCries of The Heart by Ravi Zacharias
Buy new: $11.19 / Used from: $5.89
The somber picture strikes a chord with anyone feeling pain. A great homage to Vermeer.
