Doesn't Work
This simply does not work as advertised. I tried using some solder I had in my garage, but it didn't melt it. It looked like it was trying to melt, so I went to the store and bought some thin solder, still didn't work. So, hoping my initial investment on the solder gun might eventually work, I went back and bought some hair-thin solder. It melted it; however, the solder was so thin, it evaporated before hitting the wire I was trying to solder. Unless there have been major changes in this product over the last two years since I purchased it, I see absolutely no functional use for this item.
Don't waste your money
Product is made with plastic around the soldering tool, it melted almost immediately and rendered the tool worthless. Was able to solder one thing before it broke and even that wasn't a complete job.
Read the reviews and avoid this one!
You may wish to follow the advice of others before selecting this product. I didn't pay attention to the reviews found here on Amazon.com and elsewhere, and ended up being sorry that I hadn't followed the advice of others. Had based my purchase on a previous model from a few years ago when ColdHeat was making a version for Radio Shack. What I received this time seemed to be the same at first, but it wasn't.
Pros:
- Relatively inexpensive, under $20
- Uses standard AA alkaline batteries (but see note below)
- Has a decent carrying case
Cons:
- Tips are fragile and expensive (about $10 each)
- White LED light is hidden under the unit
- Solder joints are not clean and smooth
- It's potentially dangerous to ICs because it sparks
Note: it's claimed that it solders "over 700 joints per battery pack." You would be lucky to even get a third of that, even with brand new premium AA alkaline batteries. And don't even think of using rechargeable NiCad or NiMH batteries.
Suggestion: if you need a simple and reliable soldering iron, there's always the proven Weller SP23LK Marksman 25 Watt Soldering Iron Kit, a proven product that's been around for years.
Will give this product a 2-star rating, and that's generous.
