Product Description

Stranger in Baja takes the reader to sun-struck and tawdry Cabo San Lucas, the overdeveloped resort outpost on Mexico's bone-dry southern Baja peninsula and the setting for a street war between evangelical foreigners and local Catholics. Troubled by doubts and demons, naive missionary volunteer Rob Hudson arrives in Cabo on a soul-seeking mission and finds a world of inept arsonists, wily healers, prying journalists, Machiavellian bosses, troubled hermits, hip-hop bands, lunar rituals, drug gangs and a music teacher who rocks his soul.

About the Author
Forty years ago, Stranger in Baja author John Hewitt rode third-class buses across a spider web of Central Mexican villages for a community development organization. Since then, he has produced three film documentaries on Mexico, including "Staying Lost and Found in Bahia," which explored the community of American ex-pats and desert rats who retreat to the Baja desolation. Hewitt's writing career began in newspapers and later switched to television. He has been on the faculty at San Francisco State University since 1974 and also has taught at Stanford University and in Jamaica, Jordan, Thailand, and Malaysia.

A fun read!5
Stranger in Baja is a fun read. The author's knack for description and his intuitive emotional sense of the place let you feel as if you are there. His knowledge of the legends and the history of Baja provide an intriguing background for the mysteries the adventuresome protagonist has to solve. Whether you travel by armchair or plane, this is a good story to have with you on your next trip to Baja.

A Page-Turner5
John Hewitt conjures up a vortex of personal ambitions set in the vibrant landscape of Baja. Long-hidden truths emerge as potent forces of nature, culture and history threaten to swamp the plans and dreams of mere individuals. Like the "stranger," once you land in Baja, the story pulls you along to the end.
