Excellent overview of cemeteries and how they have developed. This is not a perfect book, and I have a few minor quibbles. But generally it is a well researched and well written book. I especially found the section on Hawaiian burials interesting.

To get a feel for the very first cemeteries in America, read this primer. The Puritans were very wary of images and decoration, but needed to balance it against symbolism, because so many people were illiterate. And as time went by, the puritanical ethics in America eased up, and eventually nicer images were include.

The photo quality is not artistic enough to be a coffee table book, and the information included was sounded more like folk tales than as if the authors had actually any knowledge of their subject. But not bad for a quick read.
