Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Product Description
Svelte and stylish at just 3.6 pounds, the Averatec 1020-ED1 notebook PC offers ultimate portability and excellent computing power. It has a high-resolution AveraBrite widescreen 10.6-inch LCD. A built-in high-speed wireless LAN (802.11b/g) with dual-antenna allows for super fast Internet multimedia streaming and downloading. And you'll stay secure thanks to the included Norton AntiVirus and Intel's Execute Disable Bit functionality that can halt worm attacks and eliminate the need for software patches.

It's powered by the ultra-low voltage 1.0 GHz Intel Celeron M 373 processor, which helps extend battery life when away from the office. It also features a 60 GB hard drive, 512 MB of installed RAM (2 GB max), a DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive (for watching DVDs and burning your favorite music mixes to CD), 4-in-1 memory card reader, and Microsoft Windows XP Home operating system.

The Basics

  • Hard Drive: The 60 GB hard drive (4200 RPM) is the average size for notebook PCs (though larger than found in other notebooks of this size), providing enough capacity for storing documents, digital media files, and productivity software.
  • Processor: The ultra-low voltage Intel Celeron M 373 processor offers a 1 GHz processor speed, 1 MB L2 cache, and 400 MHz front-side bus (FSB). (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)
  • Memory: The 512 MB of installed RAM (333 MHz) is enough to get you started, but you'll want to add more RAM to handle today's demanding multimedia and productivity suites. It has a 2 GB maximum RAM capacity.
  • CD/DVD Drive: The 1020-ED1 trims down the price with a more standard DVD-ROM and CD-R/RW combo drive, rather than the newer dual-layer, multiformat DVD burner found in other comparable notebooks. However, this optical drive enables you to quickly burn your favorite music mixes to CD and comfortably watch DVD movies (with its 8x DVD-ROM speed).
Screen, Graphics and Sound
The 1020-ED1 has a 10.6-inch WXGA widescreen display with AveraBrite technology and 1280 x 768 resolution. It features the Intel Extreme Graphics 2 video card with 32 MB of video memory.

Connectivity and Expansion Slots
The 1020-ED1 has an integrated 54g wireless LAN (Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG) that's compatible with 802.11b and 802.11g networks and 125HSM/SpeedBooster and BroadRange support. You get a good, but limited selection of connectivity options:

  • 2 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
  • 1 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals
  • 1 PCMCIA (or PC Card) slot (one Type II card, 32-bit PC CardBus architecture)
  • 1 VGA monitor port
  • 1 S-Video out
  • Stereo headphones/speakers/line-out
  • Microphone/line-out
  • 4-in-1 media reader supports Secure Digital, MultiMediaCard, Memory Stick and Memory Stick PRO
It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.90) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems).

Preloaded System and Software
This system comes with the Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 operating system with Advanced Security Technologies, which helps to reduce unwanted downloads and pop-ups while surfing the Web. It also comes preloaded with Microsoft Works 8.0, Adobe Acrobat Reader, CyberLink DVD Solution, and more.

Dimensions and Weight
This notebook measures 10.5 x 8 x 1.4 inches (WxDxH) and weighs 3.6 pounds.

Power
The included rechargeable lithium-ion battery provides up to 2.5 hours of battery life.

What's in the Box
This package contains the Averatec AV3715-ED1 notebook PC, rechargeable lithium-ion battery, AC adapter, and operating instructions. It's backed by a one-year limited warranty (6 months for the battery).

Excellent Value & Fun to Own4
I bought this UltraPortable in the summer of 2005 and have loved it since It came with only the most basic of software which I appreciated after having a totally loaded down presario with 30 day subsciptions to this and that which kept popping up and slowing down my laptop. This is probably the only Sub Notebook on the Market under $1200 normally anything with a 10.6" screen weighing 3.3lbs or less will run you close to $2,000.

I am very happy with it and use it for gaming, Watching Movies and internet. The battery is strong enough to watch a 2-21/2 movie internet probably 4hrs plus on wireless and 6 on normall windows AP's . The only drawback is the DVD is read only no Burner . BTW If you haven't heard of Averatec I'm not supprised but check out there website you will see they are well on there way to becomming a Signifigant Contender in this market . & as for Customer service I have used them 1x and I was able to speak with somone in less than 20min knowledgeable on the differences in products and general availablilty. I also ordered an extra batter from there web site and recived it in a timely manner the $99 price is higher than I would have liked

Seems like an awesome value for money .. but be careful1
Bought the 1020 in a jiffy a couple of months ago - specs and pricing looked awesome, almost too good to be true.

However, it was - Too good to be true.

The laptop is quite quirky and loaded with issues - my biggest problem is the lack of a recovery CD with the laptop. You end up having to use Phoenix Recovery software (Trial version included -- so, prepare to shell out more money $$$ to be forced to upgrade if you ever want to recover your system) .. The Phoenix software is quite buggy, and requires you to be technically savvy (Which I am; but, good luck .. all of you out there)

Other problems with the laptop (I tried 2 new ones) included intermittent hard disk failure, which is further compounded by a poor BIOS that fails to manage 60GB harddisks. Not to mention the poor sensitivity of the touchpad, and, the horriblly designed ports (Network ports covered by flimsy cover)...

The ONE thing that works for the laptop is it's looks .. WOW .. the laptop looks cool .. and, really nice. So, as long as it's a showpiece and all you want to do is wave the laptop around in public - BUY IT.. But, If you want a computer -- go elsewhere -- choose another brand!!

Look at the Toshiba U205 instead - which is what I ended up buying..

Solid laptop, reasonable price4
I have owned this laptop for six months and am extremely impressed by it. It is small, has a great average battery life of 4 hours, and performs well enough for the basics and some gaming. The screen may be small, but it's beautiful, the keyboard is not as cramped as it should be for a computer of this size/weight and, by far the best part: it is incredibly light at 3.6 lbs. The reason for 4 stars instead of 5: the touchpad is a bit 'jumpy', though that can be fixed with methods found in online forums (I did and it now works well). The built-in wireless, like most, is fairly weak, but that can be taken care of with a 20 dollar wireless adapter. Overall, though, the machine is an excellent value.
