great verticle storage
Bought 2 of the 45's last year. The free shipping is great because of the weight. These babies are built of strong thick walled material and are sturdy enough for holding almost anything. Installation on a flat ceiling is not difficult. I'd grade it a 3 out of five on difficulty scale. When finished, I connected the two units with a small piece of square tubing salvaged from some old drawer pulls(painted white to match). I also drilled a hole in the bottom of one verticle member and sunk a 2" screw into wall. Now the two units are like a rock. Very happy with all that extra storage. I don't understand negative reviews re: ceiling units. If you have run out of storage on the floor, this IS the ticket. Quality is high and so is my satisfaction.

GREAT item, however poor quality control
I'll start off with this - this is a *great* item. It's really helped to clear the clutter in my garage. They were simple enough to install by myself, although I ended up coming up with my own procedure that's easier than the one in the directions.

If you have one of these and haven't installed it yet, I differed from the instructions by installing only two ceiling brackets to begin with (the ones on the same side, but separate support bars). Manual has you install all 4 first, which makes alignment a pain since you're having to measure out 42" across the ceiling (also the manual says 45" - that's incorrect). Install one of the downrods in each ceiling bracket. Now, before you attach it to the ceiling, install the remaining downrod and ceiling bracket in each support bar. Now attach the free end of the support bar to the downrod that's already installed. during the process, don't tighten the fasteners - do that at the end. Remember this is supposed to be installed so the tubes run parallel with your joists. Use a stud finder to find where the opposing bracket needs to be screwed into the ceiling and mark the two holes for the ceiling bracket. If you didn't tighten the fasteners you should be able to move each arm out of the way and pre-drill holes in the ceiling for the remaining brackets. Fasten the remaining ceiling brackets and then tighten all the fasteners in the support structure. Follow the directions from there. Doing it this way will make your life much easier.

Anway, back to the review. I've partially installed six of them. That's why this gets a 3* review instead of a 5. A great product such as this one can be hampered by poor quality control. Two of the six units I ordered were missing one ceiling bracket. I followed the directions and rather than returning it to Amazon, I called the manufacturer (Hyloft) and they said they'd get them right out to me. Boy was that a mistake. That was two weeks ago and I still haven't received anything. I called once to see what the status was and it turns out they "lost" my order. I had to place a new order. today I called back again and they say that the particular piece I'm missing is on back order and won't be in for another week. They also quote another week to ship. So in all, it's going to be a MONTH from when I first got these until the time I can finally finish installing all of them (5/6 are up right now). That's pretty poor customer service if you ask me.

In the future, forget what the instructions say - my defective items are going back to the "store"!

Great - but a pain to install
I averaged 2 hours per unit installation. Shipping was terrible - came torn apart with a few missing parts, but the manufacturer shipped me replacements. Installation was NOT fun - but gives you a ton of storage space.
