Product Description

Scholarly and empirically based, this market-leading text gives students what they need to understand using the principles and practices of applied behavioral management in the classroom. The content is presented clearly, in a friendly, accessible--even fun--manner. The eighth edition uses classroom-based examples and practices firmly grounded in research. Content is presented in the order of decision-making by a teacher who has a student exhibiting challenging behavior in class or a student who needs to execute a behavior-change project. The text covers identifying target behavior, collecting and graphing data, functional assessment, experimental design, arranging antecedents and consequences, generalizing behavior change and discusses the importance of ethical considerations in using applied behavior analysis in the classroom.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
This widely-adopted introductory text presents behavior analysis principles hand-in-hand with a wealth of examples showing their practical classroom applications. To give students a better understanding of how behavior analysis actually works, the sequence of chapters follows that of an actual behavior analysis project; and actual data recording sheets, charts, and tables are provided in the text. The fictional "Professor Grundy" helps keep material lively and relevant by responding to objections to behavior modification, using shaping techniques in his own classroom, and instructing students in writing behavioral objectives.

From the Back Cover

For over 25 years, the author team of Alberto and Troutman has written a technically sound, systematically organized and highly-readable text for students of applied behavior analysis, behavior management, and behavior modification courses. The text continues its tradition of aiding students in their understanding of the core concepts of applied behavior analysis, how to apply these concepts in the classroom and alternative settings, and to use the tools and methods appropriately and ethically. Scholarly and empirically based, this market-leading text gives students what they need to understand using the principles and practices of applied behavioral management in the classroom in a friendly, accessible–even fun–manner. The newly revised Applied Behavior Analysis for Teachers, 8/e, does not disappoint.

Regarding 7th Edition Only3
The 7th Edition is precisely what I find wrong with textbook publishing today. If you're a graduate student (or any student for that matter), you have probably noticed that new editions for textbooks are being released increasingly more frequently, rendering texts far less valuable for resale than they would ordinarily be. I went to the book store and found ABA for Teachers with both the 6th and 7th editions on the shelf. I was cynical about how much the book would have changed in roughly a year's time from one edition to the next, and sure enough, they are practically identical.

It is almost humorous to note that the forewards of the two editions were not even modified. The paragraph on 'Updates' to the editions is the same, noting substantial changes to one chapter and the decision to retain a particular example about a mouse. I referred to the chapter in question, and it was the same in both books. By all appearances, the changes to the 7th edition (to my eyes) are all cosmetic and do not involve content. The 7th edition is almost one hundred pages shorter than the the previous edition, due it appears to the format being changed to more of a workbook-type, taller text. Also, the headings and sidenotes now have colored fonts in many instances. If having a taller, thinner text and colored fonts is worth the extra money to you, go ahead and shell out the extra money. Otherwise, don't let the book publishers get the last laugh and stick with the 6th edition which is in substance the same book.

Understand data collection and applied behavior analysis5
One of the best texts on Applied Behavior Analysis! It is extremely user friendly with lots of examples applicable to today's classroom. I've used several editions of this text...as a grad student, a classroom teacher, and now as a college professor. I would highly recommend it to any teacher (or future teacher) or any university instructor as a college text.

Great reference to understand the principles of ABA5
This book was the textbook which was prescribed for a graduate course that I took in Behavior Modification. It is an excellent reference book that clearly explains many of the prinicples on which ABA is based such as the different forms and schedules of reinforcement and the different methods of taking data. Although this book was prescribed for a course I completed well over a year ago, I have referreed to it on multiple occassions in the last year. This book should be in every ABA provider's bookcase.
