Product Description

Beginning drawing and writing lessons for children ages five to ten. BOOK 7 focuses on forest animals of the world -- tropical and temperate. The books are simple enough for a young child to do independently, but a teacher or parent may present the lessons. Each drawing lesson includes a colorful picture and step-by-step instructions, while the writing lesson includes four simple handwritten sentences. The teacher or parent may introduce letter formation or have the children copy the sentences for handwriting practice, or use the lessons as a springboard for creative writing or report writing. Developed by an elementary school teacher and co-authored by her daughter. A brief list of the 21 lessons in the book includes chimpanzee, leopard, alligator, toucan, grizzly bear, fox, porcupine, moose, kangaroo, platypus and koala.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
Circle the globe and draw the animals that inhabit Earth’s tropical forests in Asia, Africa and South America. Then draw and write about the forest animals living in the northern temperate forests of the world. Next, take a peek down under at the animals of the forests of Australia. The series won the Teachers' Choice Award, is a regular recipient of Practical Homeschooling Reader Awards, and was selected one of the top new products at NSSEA Ed Expo 2001.

From the Author
This book has one of my favorite lessons -- drawing a simple map of the world. It begins with an introduction to the Prime Meridian and Equator, and then drawing each continent using simple ovals. While developing a mental image of the map, the child also develops a comprehension of Earth's basic geography. Later, when a child hears about Africa in the news or in discussion, they can imagine their simple world map and relate the location of Africa to the location of their home. -- Kim Stitzer

About the Author
During her 30 year career as a public school teacher, Marie Hablitzel developed drawing lessons for her second and third grade students. The lessons were integrated with her social studies, geography, science, history, and language arts lessons. Marie and her husband, Bob, raised six children and live in Red Bluff, California.

Kim Stitzer, Marie's daughter, grew up with the lessons and saw a way for other people to enjoy them when her five-year-old daughter began receiving drawing lessons from Marie in postal letters. Kim and her husband, Randy, live with their two children in Poulsbo, Washington.

Customer Reviews

Love this drawing series!5
This is a great book for beginner elementary aged artist, for reports on animals. The drawings are very easy to duplicate for the average 2nd/4th grader. For more technique try Drawing with Children. I have boughten everyone in this series because it has great ideas and the drawings are fun to make. My girls have made some pretty spectacular pictures with these books as their inspiration.

Where writing really is an art!5
Anyone who has ever picked up this series knows how great it is for kids! My son was so proud of himself last week when he was able to learn how to draw an elephant for the first time!! He didn't think the rest of the family would believe he had been the artist of the picture now hanging on our fridge. Of course the handwriting review is great, but I use these books as my art curriculum. I appreciate the way they break drawing down into steps (lines and curves) that make sense.

I love these books, and all three of my kids have loved them too. Enjoy!

Great for reluctant writer!4
I'm a homeschooling mom. My daughter has excelled in Reading, but hates writing. She comes up with stories while playing, but when she is asked to write she hates it. Knowing that she enjoys animals and enjoys art, I thought this would be a good choice. It encourages her to write. The only reason why it didn't get 5 stars is that it doesn't show you how to draw the baby koala or the backround pictures.
