Customer Reviews
The keyboard I've been waiting for.
This keyboard is great. For years I have been looking for a keyboard that would take up minimum space on my desk. I don't ever use a number pad, and don't use all the bells and whistles buttons that most keyboards have. With this one, I just don't attach the number pad and that gives it a small footprint and locates the mouse close to the keyboard. It's all very slick looking, has a nice weight that keeps it in place, and does not have the clickety clack feel or sound that other keyboards have. The mouse was a nice surprise, also with just that right feel and weight, and has a little trackball for scrolling that is easy to control. My computer is located in a compartment inside my desk, and the compact USB receiver sometimes did not connect. My Dell flat panel monitor has two USB connectors on the side, so I moved it there and it's fine. If I wanted to use the receiver installed inside the desk compartment, which I might still decide to do, I think I would try using a USB extension cable to get it in a better position to reliably maintain its connection. The pictures of it shown on the Amazon web site as well as the Kensington site are quite fuzzy, so I was wary that it might be typical of that creaky plastic construction of keyboards I've had in the past. I was pleasantly suprised how solid it is. Superb quality. (But, $$$. I guess you get what you pay for.)
Great media centre addition
I bought this product as a keyboard/mouse addition to my mac mini powered media centre. The graphite keyboard looks really nice and is also pretty compact (especialy when you disconnect the numeric keypad). The slim profile of the mouse is also ideal for my setup. The fact that it works well with the mac especially with some of the media keys is an added bonus. The range is good enough for me but then there isn't much of a distance from the couch to the mac mini/tv. I also like the keyboard layout which keeps both mac and pc users happy (especially with the positioning of the command and windows keys with respect to ctrl and alt)
Some of the caveats:
1) I am having trouble with the mouse on some surfaces - for example my couch. The microsoft intellimouse performed better.
2) I have permanently disconnected the numeric keypad. But the keypad does not lock into the main keyboard very strongly. It does have a magnetic link and thus it can lock in - However the bond is pretty weak. That could be a problem if you plan to use the keyboard like a traditional keyboard. Again this is not a problem with my setup
3) Some of the special keys do not work - The music key and whatever the third special key seem to have no action. I have just plugged the keyboard in on leopard and have not installed any special software. The eject, dashboard and spotlight key work well.
Overall it is a little pricey, But it is a great looking and usable keyboard/mouse.
Impressive Product!!
I don't usually write product reviews but this product has far exceeded my expectations and deserves a few minutes of my time. I bought this because I wanted a small, compact keyboard I could haul around and would fit in my laptop bag. This product caught my eye and the reviews were very positive.
This product is very solid with a metallic titanium color finish. It is indeed small and has a nice, although non-adjustable, tilt to it. The keys are outstanding, with just the right feedback and click for me. There are no extra, read unnecessary, keys.
I took it out of the box, put in the batteries and plugged it in. I looked everywhere for the USB key (they call it a "Dongle"). I thought they had forgotten to include it but it was neatly tucked into its travel position inside the mouse battery box. Don't send the unit back until you look there first!!
The mouse is an odd shape but surprisingly comfortable and I have very big hands. The laser is really nice, very accurate and quick. The roller ball is small and very sensitive. It scrolls down perfectly.
Finally, I really like the detachable numeric keypad. If I don't need it it stays in the bag, if I do, it loosely attaches magnetically to the side of the keyboard (either side!). Great idea for travellers!!
I'd give this product more stars if I could but kudos to Kensington for getting it right. A little pricey but the build quality is so high that I think it's a bargain. This is NOT a typical keyboard/ mouse combo.
