Amazon.com Product Description
Protect important paper documents and photos from thieves, heat and flames with this electronic, digital locking steel box. The box holds 8-1/2 by 11-inch papers and photos stored flat, protecting them against fire and temperatures reaching 1,550 degrees F for up to 30 minutes. The safe is also equipped with waterproof seal that keeps documents dry if emergency sprinklers are triggered. With 330 cubic inches of storage space, there's plenty of room for all those important documents and photos, with no folding necessary. A one-push latch and lock system means easy access and quick storage. --Brian D. Olson
From the Manufacturer
Imagine the horror of enduring a fire or flood in your home or office and the pain of rebuilding. While couches and lamps and dishes are replaceable, imagine not being able to replace important documents and electronic files that are destroyed in the fire, by the water used to fight the fire, or by a flood. While shopping for a new couch might be fun, waiting in line at the county office to obtain a new birth certificate or marriage license is annoying at the very best. Why not be prepared in case of a fire by placing your important documents and computer back-up devices in the Honeywell model 2017 1/2 hour fire rated chest that is also waterproof? The 2017 is conveniently sized to store letter sized documents lying flat. The 2017 is a UL classified media protection device tested to withstand an external temperature up to 1550 degrees for 1/2 hour. Most residential fires last less than 30 minutes so the 2017 is a good choice for a small document and electronic media protection solution. In addition to the UL testing, the 2017 has also been independently verified to protect electronic media, such as memory sticks, CD¿s, DVD¿s and external hard drives, in a fire. The independently verified waterproof seal on the 2017 enables the chest to float during a flood, making it easy to locate, as well as providing protection from the flood water. The 2017 includes a convenient carry handle and is secured by a clamping style latch with key lock. All Honeywell fire rated products are covered by a 5 year manufacturer¿s warranty and will be replaced free of charge if damaged in a fire.
Customer Reviews
Sturdy and roomy
There's a good amount of heft to this safe, which leads me to think it would hold up fairly well in the event of fire. Luckily, I have not had to test it's durability in fire or waterproofness (and hope I never will).
There's plenty of room for several important documents and a handful of jewelry. At about 20 lbs it's not something you'd want to move around all the time.
good and bad news
The box itself is strong and meets my goal of safety from fire. The lock looks flimsy, the keys look like part of a child's toy, the plastic looks like it could melt in a fire, leaving you with a solid and secure box, with no way of entry.
Heavy but will it stay closed in a fire?
Received this safe today and it is heavy. I bought this safe to keep my valuables safe in event of a fire and water. I didn't buy it to keep them safe from thieves or the hands of intruders. But on close inspection, I've noticed that the latch to close it is plastic. So it made me think, will in stay shut in an event of a fire? Let's hope it doesn't get put to the test. Overall I'm keeping it (too damn heavy to return). Enough room in there to keep your valuables and 11x8 documents. I guess if you purchase safe it'll be put to test only once, let's hope it holds up as stated.
