I don't care if you're a girl or a guy. If you've never had to manage your own space bigger than a dorm room then you need this book. The best part is that it lists out everything in really simple terms (including a list of all the different cleaning products you should have). If you can give one thing to a college student with a new apartment I think this would be the most helpful.

This is one stupid item that I almost forgot to bring. You need your own clock so that you can see what time it is without having to find your cell phone. Actually a copule of clocks are ideal.

In a smallish apartment, you need to go up. Take advantage of all vertical space by adding a smaller bookcase to the top of your desk, or getting a full size bookcase like this to store things.

A good fleece throw or two for the couch and the bed are really useful for studying when it's cooler (or sleeping too!)

Make sure your plates are microwave safe (I believe that livingware is which is why I recommended it).

Steak knives are really important depending on what types of meals you cook (also getting a full knife set could be benificial).

I wouldn't want you to slip in the tub. It's a pretty essential item, but a lot of times you don't think to get it until you're already there.

For anything besides clothes and bathroom products, I actually think bins are easier than drawers. I store books, board games, wires, and fitness stuff in different bins. It's nice to be able to move the bins where I need them and then return them when I'm done.

Vacuums are relatively inexpensive, and uprights fit well into small spaces. Bag vacuums are a lot less work when it comes time to clean them out.

I keep this under the sink so that all my cleaning supplies are in one place. Also makes a good soak bucket if you have to do your own dishes or want to use a regular sponge or mop.

Another important cleaning tool to scrub down plates, the tub, or your kitchen sink.

This works on both wood and glass. I use it in the bedroom and living room.
