Amazon.com Review
Time-efficient and thorough, this EmPower bagless vacuum from Hoover uses turbo power to clean rugs, carpeting, hardwood floors, upholstery, and more. The upright 12-amp vacuum offers two power settings and five height levels to accommodate a wide variety of floor and carpet types, removing both deeply embedded dirt and light dust. custom power boost function for serious matting and soiling. With a long-lasting HEPA cartridge filter, the vacuum also improves an environment's air quality, stripping away dust mites, ragweed, and most grass pollen. In removing and containing these allergens, the newly vacuumed room provides relief for sufferers of seasonal allergies like hay fever and helps minimize the discomfort for individuals with cat or dog allergies.
To ensure a clean carpet, the 15-inch wide vacuum head features a helpful headlight to illuminate soiled patches. The agitation from the vacuum's brush roll uproots dirt from even the plushest carpet. For heavily soiled or matted patches, engage the push-button power boost function to strengthen the vacuum's suction and agitation. Avoid disturbing sleeping babies, children at study, or crabby adults or pets by operating the cleaning appliance in Hush mode, which runs on lower power for quieter housekeeping. Debris travels through a Teflon-coated HEPA cartridge filter into a sealed dual-chamber dust cup. The chambers are transparent to allow easy monitoring of the dust cup's fullness. The dust cup detaches from the vacuum body for easy emptying. This EmPower model includes a bonus, extra-reach hose for the hard-to-reach spaces under beds or high ceiling dusting. Additional tools and accessories include a powered hand tool for pet hair and stairs, extension wand, dusting brush, upholstery nozzle, and a crevice tool and wand. The vacuum handle folds down for compact storage. The power cord on this vacuum spans 31 feet in distance. For the best results, the HEPA filter should be replaced every three years and should never be washed. Hoover offers a two-year warranty for parts and labor. The pre-assembled vacuum weighs 22 pounds upon shipping. --Jessica Reuling

Call me crazy...
but I couldn't be happier with this Hoover EmPower 970, especially for $100.
This might be Hoover's most stylish model with colors ranging from sunset orange to emerald green, but we Mongols are pretty conservative when we're buying home appliances for our burnoose, so I went with the silver model.
I'll bet I read more than 30 negative reviews on this Hoover Empower before rolling the dice and bringing one home. It appears that a lot of people were unhappy with its performance and took theirs back, but I wont be one of those people. As a professional bachelor, I have some experience at vacuuming, and this Hoover outperforms all other mid-range Hoovers and Eurekas that have passed before it...and then some.
First of all, this unit is NOT self-propelled as you might read elsewhere, and its true that the "Hush" mode isn't one db quieter than the normal mode, but one feature that many have complained about that I disagree with is the "turbo/power boost" mode cause I see a significant difference in cleaning power when that function is engaged. I dont know that you get any more suction power in turbo mode, but you can see the agitator brush RPMs go up dramatically, and I get visible results when I vacuum high traffic areas using this feature.
The hand tools work as you would expect, maybe a little better from a 12amp unit, and there's even a powered hand tool that works great in tight spots. I've also seen complaints that the hand tools are in the way of the power cord, lots of people are irate about that. You know, where the hell are you people from anyway that are complaining about this HUNDRED DOLLAR vacuum cleaner? Ya'll are nuts, this is a great buy. My only complaint, is that the power cord came out of the box in a knot so I had to untie it myself, and the only other complaint is that the User Guide was not in the top of the box where it should be, but on the bottom and I'm not smart enough to turn the damn box over so I got stuck upside down in the box 3 times before I finally fished it out. haw haw
And finally, almost everybody takes issue with the emptying and cleaning of the dirt cup so here's the deal on that. Its all one molded assembly, so the filter is on one side of the cup, and the dirt and god knows what you're vacuuming up is collected into solid plastic container on the other side. Its easy to remove the filter from the housing, but as others have noted, you may want to be outside when you do this cause the dust flies when you pull the filter, but its easy to clean and replace so I dont really have a problem with it. There's a reason this and other bagless machines were designed this way. All in all a terrific tool for the money. 5 Brooms
Excellent Mid-Range Buy!!!
I fully agree with "Genghis" on this machine. I am a 23 year old female who lives with two other girls who don't quite keep things very tidy. And my roomie has been moving out, so TONS of dust and dirt has accumulated in our carpet. Plus, we had a crappy 50 dollar Hoover before... that one of my roomies own. And it sucks!
THIS ONE, however, does not. Well, it "sucks"...but not in the bad way. haha. When people say it is self-propelled, they don't mean that it moves itself. HOWEVER, it does somewhat "pull itself". You can feel a bit of a tug when you vacuum, which is quite nice. And the hush mode isn't much quieter than the regular mode, but I really don't care for that, because I don't intend on vacuuming when people are sleeping.
Honestly, I have zero complaints about this machine. Our floors were FILTHY and one quick go-over with this... gosh... sooooo much better! And the bagless thing is quite easy to clean... you may have to scrape it off the screen that seperates the compartments of the filter and the compartment that the dust and dirt accumulates at...but that is what a spatula is for (I am practical). Or use your hands, just wash them... gosh, people can whine over the stupidest things sometimes.
So for 99 bucks, which is what I bought mine for... this thing is great! Definitely a smart buy.
Disappointing
I bought the Hoover Empower Turbo because I wanted a folding vacuum with Hush mode and a Pet Brush. I bought the Turbo model because I liked the silver color over the other Empower Ipod colors. When I took it out of the box, the first thing I noticed was that there is only one extension wand. Most vacuums have two. This model has an extra hose, but I am not tall and would prefer an extra wand.
The second thing I noticed when I turned it on was that it pulled itself forward, but was more work to pull it back.
The next thing I noticed was that the Hush mode didn't seem much different than regular mode. Those commercials with the sleeping father and child are a joke.
During vacuuming, the hose came off of the main valve. It doesn't really 'lock' on.
On all of the Hoover folding vacuums, the cord wrap is in front of the hose. Which means you can't access the hose while vacuuming unless the cord is unwound all the way (that is too much loose cord for me). I had to stop vacuuming to unwind the rest of the cord so I could access the hose.
The pet brush was ok. I have a eureka hand vac with a rotation brush that does a similar job. The pet brush attached to the vacuum might have more power.
I did think that it picked up a lot of dirt right away - that was impressive. I liked that I could see it and dump it immediately. I don't like that the replacement filters are one of the most expensive on the market.
I think I am going to return this one and get the Hoover Cyclonic instead (no filters or bags to replace - ever).
