Editorial Reviews

Review
As accountability for academic performance increases, it becomes even more important that we make sure that we are addressing the "whole child" so that our students learn social and emotional skills as well as the academic skills needed to be successful. Tribes provides Spring Branch educators a process that develops well-rounded, creative, critical thinkers with a strong foundation in ethics and character. --Duncan Klussmann, Ed.D., Superintendent, Spring Branch ISD, Houston, Texas

Resilience research demonstrates that schools, and the people within them, have the power to transform young lives. Through the Tribes process, Jeanne Gibbs, once again, shows educators and youth workers exactly what they can do to provide the caring relationships, positive expectations, and opportunities for participation and contribution that promote both positive youth development and successful learning. --Bonnie Benard, Senior Program Associate, WestEd, Human Development Program, Oakland, California

Tribes is a treasured book both in my professional library and in the libraries of the new teachers with whom I work. It is a wonderful gift to a new generation of teachers graduating from the Faculty of Education, University of Toronto. By learning how to build community in their pre-service program, our new teachers develop the "habits of the heart" that they take into their classrooms, schools and communities. --Carol Rolheiser, Ph.D., Associate Dean, University of Toronto, Canada

From the Publisher
Tribes, A New Way of Learning and Being Together blends the fields of group process and cooperative learning; prevention and resiliency; learning theory and school change into a comprehensive, meaningful whole.

About the Author
Jeanne Gibbs has spent her professional career studying, writing and implementing systemic processes and programs to support children's development and prevent youth problems. Her perspective on human development is a systems approach that encourages schools, families and communities to create healthy environments in which children can grow and learn. The developmental culture and educational process now known as Tribes Learning Communities evolved out of years of studies Jeanne has pursued to synthesize a wealth of literature pertaining to the ecology of human development and learning. She is convinced that well being and success for students is not a result of curriculum, instruction and assessment nor of intelligence but the result of a school finally focusing on the growth and whole human development of its students in all aspects of their individual uniqueness and brilliance. The vision takes on reality whenever a school system focuses first on creating and sustaining a caring culture in which children truly are able to discover themselves and succeed.

Positive results were almost immediate in my 4-5 class.5
When I first read Tribes I was concerned about giving up valuable curricular time for Tribes activities but I was desperate! The net result in my 4-5 combination class was a tremendous increase in productive teaching and learning. Even my most difficult students are now productive members in our room. As a new teacher this book allowed me to keep my sanity and created a cohesive, warm, and fun place to learn. Thank you Jeanne Gibbs!

excellent resource for all teachers5
This book has brilliant and interesting ideas to keep the classroom motivated. The games are fun and are suitable for all ages. This book is a must for all teachers !!!!

Tribes-a great resource book5
I am a Teacher Assistant and work with Special Need students. The Teacher and myself use tools in this book everyday. It offers fantastic ideas and strategies for the classroom, no matter what age group. I work with 7yr old to 12 yr olds. They all benefit from the activities in this book. It is a good idea to have it with you in the classroom and to use it spontaneously when an incident may arise. It is a very user fiendly book. I highly recommend it.
