Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
When Frank Van Riper introduced his noted “Talking Photography” column at the Washington Post ten years ago, its enormous popularity quickly earned it cult status among photography buffs. His “splendid mix” of quirky anecdotes, unorthodox technical advice, and aesthetic meditations on everything photographic has hit a nerve among professional and amateur photographers, and his intimate accounts from his work behind the camera and in collaboration with his wife Judith Goodman have warmed the hearts of many. Now the Pulitzer-nominated writer, lifetime photographer, and untiring mentor of photography has assembled his most intriguing columns into a fascinating overview of his profession.

In TALKING PHOTOGRAPHY, photographers and photography aficionados will find

* Tips and techniques for solving challenging problems, such as shooting under fluorescent light
* Inspiring meditations on the art, including an encounter with star-author and writing peer Steven King
* Interviews with photography icons Bruce Davidson, Sheila Metzner, Arnold Newman, and Neil Selkirk
* An historic trip with Jimmy Carter and other milestones from Van Riper’s life of a political reporter, commercial and documentary photographer, and passionate writer
*Reviews of hallmark photography books and exhibitions

From the Author
"TALKING PHOTOGRAPHY, a collection of my Washington Post columns and other photography writing over the past ten years, is more than a how-to book. It is, I hope, an inclusive overview of what makes photography fascinating to both amateurs and professionals, as well to people who rarely lift a camera but who love the work that we do.

In one sense, this slick, thick, lavishly illustrated trade paperback published by Allworth Press is a one-volume textbook for photography students. It also is a frankly written analysis of the business and craft of professional photography. Finally, it is an affectionate discussion of this highly accessible, yet sometimes misunderstood “art.” In short, something for everyone."

Frank Van Riper on TALKING PHOTOGRAPHY

From the Inside Flap
“Frank Van Riper’s hands-on knowledge of all things photographic lends authority and insight to his writing, whether the subject is electronic flash or the work of Henri Cartier-Bresson. This is a book of multiple pleasures for anyone with an interest in photography.” — Andy Grundberg, Former New York Times Critic, Curator, and Author, Crisis of the Real “Grab your camera! Talking Photography has something for everybody. Van Riper brings the complexity of the art and technology down to earth, and draws us into his process with well-told stories. His enthusiasm for photography is infectious." — Philip Brookman, Senior Curator of Photography and Media Arts, Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.

“An astonishing outpouring of erudition on every imaginable aspect of the medium.” — Neil Selkirk, Photographer

“We all know a picture is worth a thousand words, but when the words accompanying the pictures are from Frank, it makes for a splendid mix. He is one of the few photographic writers who has the ability to put into words—in a meaningful way—what photography is about. I wait impatiently for the week to roll around to see what new gem Frank has discovered.” — David Burnett, Photographer

“The life of a freelance photographer can be exciting and adventurous. Unfortunately, very few fine photographers also have the verbal skills to tell a story and really draw you into their life. Frank Van Riper is the rare exception, and I found his book as magnetic as a fine novel, and just as hard to put down. It’s a ripping good read.” —Bob Shell, Photographer and Photography Industry Consultant

Customer Reviews

Only useful for People Photography..1
If the stock photography you do does NOT have people in it (Such as product or travel photography), this book is of no value at all to you. This book ONLY deals with topics such as how to arrange a shot with models, or what are the uses for the types of photos with people in them.

This book is being tossed in the trash, as it doesn't even have enough value to even take up my bookshelf space!
