Customer Reviews

Not so necessary3
After the departure of talented vocalist Kari Rueslatten The 3rd and the Mortal hired the also talented Ann-Mari Edvarsen to help them with the singing while moving to a significant change of their musical approach as well. This short four song EP works as the transition between their atmospheric doomy music to a hard to describe style, much influenced by jazz, rock and ambient , still retaining their atmospheric elements. The new singer, Ann-Mari, has a very distinctive voice and is especially good when singing high notes, giving an eerie feeling very suitable to the overall music. The four songs are rather weird, close to their style on the following album, Painting on Glass, but still very different as well. Most of the songs are created by the use of keyboards which lay an atmospheric piece creating the beautiful atmospheres which are accompanied by Ann-Mari's haunting vocals and clean or distorted, guitar intermezzos. The tempos are kept most of the time at slow levels following the guitars and keyboards. The final track is a keyboard piece, filled with various effects. Overall, the album succeeds in its purpose which is to introduce fans to the new The 3rd and the Mortal style and the new singer but is still very far from being a necessity.
