![]() | Souvenirs by The Gathering
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $5.98 "Mandylion" was my absolute favorite of theirs until I found this masterpiece 2 years later... let's just say, WOW. The trip-rock atmosphere introduced here really takes you for a mind-blowing ride and puts the band into a territory that Evanescence, Lacuna Coil and any other goth rock band couldnt hope to reach. Oh and I also love Anneke Van Geirsbergen's voice :)
![]() | Reggatta De Blanc [Digipak] by The Police
Buy new: $9.98 / Used from: $1.98 Back in the late 70s, The Police were a very promising young punk/pop band. They were the first to really adopt and incorporate a consistent "white reggae" style, and thus "Reggatta" is a true winner, especially with songs like "Message In A Bottle". This was before the days of Every Breath You Take, so the sound here is much more raw and experimental. Zenyatta Mondatta is also excellent.
![]() | The Fragile by Nine Inch Nails
Buy new: $22.99 / Used from: $1.88 This was the last one I ended up purchasing from Trent & co, but surprisingly found this double-disc to be their best, most dense, and in depth album to date. It gets better with every listen and stands as one of the greatest industrial pieces of art of the 90s. Trent manages to make keyboards sound organic. All his other albums are worth checking out too.
![]() | Nihil by KMFDM
Buy used from: $0.89 Definitely the best coming from this ultra-heavy-beat delux industrial act. They blend a slew of industrial metal/techno styles with a catchiness and sense of humor that are unmatched. Some may find them corny, but hey music doesn't get a lot more fun than this! Any of their work has songs that are top notch, although Nihil is perhaps their most consistent. Plus its got Juke Joint Jezebel.
![]() | The Human Equation [Regular Edition] by Ayreon
Buy new: $19.98 / Used from: $5.99 Arjen A Luccassen made me a fan with his past albums which combined a plethora of guest musicians with a "70s rock opera meets Euro-metal" style, but with Human Equation, he really gave us a winner. James Labrie of Dream Theater plays the main character. This double-disc is a feast of killer music that no one should pass up. Dare I call this the best album of 2004? You bet!
![]() | Panamarenko by Pineforest Crunch
Buy new: $12.98 / Used from: $6.36 Ahhh such a great band! Plus, you can't go wrong with a sweet voice like Asa Eklund taking the lead with her innocent style. It makes for the perfect happy chill music. This here is alternative pop of the highest caliber. "Panamarenko" is their best because it combines the catchiness of "Make Believe" with the epic sound of "Shangri-la", but really, all three of them are amazing must owns.
![]() | Images and Words by Dream Theater
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $2.99 Still my favorite DT and prog metal album to date. These guys are amazing musicians that seldom disappoint, though I&W is where it all came together the best. Picture the technical musicianship & melody of Rush with the metal sheen of Metallica rolled into one. This album set the stage for the rest of DT's career as well as a slew of clone-bands to follow.
![]() | Ocean Machine by Devin Townsend
Buy used from: $38.98 Devin is the man, and his music has a unique sound and songwriting talent that few will ever hope to achieve. Still, after enjoying nearly all his stuff, I find his first solo outing to be my absolute favorite. It's just full of depth, variety, atmospherics, heaviness, and the last couple tracks are by far the best ending to an album ever. Do also check out his other stuff.
![]() | Garbage by Garbage
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $0.50 I wasn't much of a 90s alternative/electro pop fusion fan until I heard this slice of goodness. Shirley Manson's sultry voice fits well with the band's catchy, yet intricately original melody style. They proved to me that 90s pop can in fact be wonderful. Especially with songs such as "I'm Only Happy When It Rains" and "Stupid Girl". Check out Version 2.0 as well.
![]() | Rage for Order by Queensrÿche
Buy new: $11.94 / Used from: $7.23 SCREAMING IN DIGITAL!! That phrase and song title pretty much sums up their sophomore effort. 80s metal combined with a robotic, almost industrial sheen, and matched with epic songwriting. Of course, Mindcrime is their most well-received and perhaps best album, but RFO has that special something that keeps me coming back for more.
![]() | In Absentia by Porcupine Tree
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $6.06 Still Porcupine Tree's best, combining a distinct alternative style with Pink Floyd-like finesse and the atmospheric trappings of their earlier work. Deadwing is a close second though. Very moody in spots. Definitely for fans who like Radiohead and perhaps some of the more recent progressive rock like Pain of Salvation.
![]() | Awakening the World by Lost Horizon
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $6.45 Ahhh yes. Over the top power metal that's actually done right. Despite their Manowar-like image, these guys unleash powerful songs that never fall into the trap of harpsi-chord keyboards/Yngwie Malmsteen-noodling that most other power metal bands do. The opener song "Heart of Storm" alone revived my general interest in exploring metal. And the rest of the disc is just fantastic.
![]() | De-Loused in the Comatorium by The Mars Volta
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $3.68 Became a fan with Frances The Mute, but having picked this one up, De-loused immediately struck me as their best to date. Picture the band Yes if their music was more latin-flavored, and contained equal parts of Muse & Pink Floyd. Their songs are full of energy that few bands capture. A more distinct recent prog band if there ever was one. Also check out their new one Amputecture.
![]() | Extension of the Wish by Andromeda
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $4.78 Here's another real prog-metal gem. One of the few bands to take DT's sound and make it their own into something truly amazing. They vary it up plenty in style between songs, from the haunting melodies of "Crescendo of thoughts" to the sheer power of "Starshooter Supreme". Perhaps this could be the best debut album by a band ever made. Short but memorable. Too bad the followups weren't as good.
![]() | Alive in Athens by Iced Earth
Buy new: $19.98 / Used from: $4.14 IE back when they were in their prime and had Matt Barlow on vocals. I'm normally not so hot on live albums, but this one actually amazed me in nearly every way. This monster three-disc set has them shredding metal of titanic proportions in front of legions of their biggest fans, playing their best stuff over the years on the "Something Wicked" tour. AIA makes me smile :)
![]() | Kid A by Radiohead
Buy new: $11.94 / Used from: $2.58 While OK Computer is the most well-liked and perhaps their best overall, Kid A is my personal favorite, desipite its "love it/hate it" status the bigger RH fans give it. They take the sound of OK Computer and bring some electronics more into the forefront. The songwriting here is just astounding, to say the least.
![]() | Destroy Erase Improve by Meshuggah
Buy used from: $5.95 Meshuggah is a band that all screamcore hacks try to immitate but NEVER do justice to. Their distinctive technical flavor mixed with machine-like chugging, jazzy out-of-this-world solos, and a noticeable lack of melody put them on the map. These guys and also Strapping Young Lad and Opeth convinced me that monotonic screaming/growling vocalists can work if done right.
![]() | Winterheart's Guild by Sonata Arctica
Buy used from: $89.95 Another power metal release that stays true to its name. This time we have a band that although they mimick the Stratovarius-like school of thought that most other power metal bands do, these guys manage to not only play that style well, but pull it off much better than their influence! At least on WG, they show us a band that has a promising future with their goosebump-inducing melodies.
![]() | Lemuria/Sirius B by Therion
Buy new: $19.98 / Used from: $10.89 Forget Metallica's S&M, this double-album is where the real symphonic metal is at! Take metal, add an orchestra, plus an assortment of different vocal styles ranging from death growls to full choirs, and actually writing the songs around the metal/orchestra combination and you get this winner. The metal guitar sound production here is one of the best Ive heard.
![]() | Underwater Sunlight by Tangerine Dream
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $9.77 If Devin Townsend's Ocean Machine is the perfect heavy album about the ocean, then this TD outing makes for the perfect tranquil ocean soundtrack. TD has always been top notch in instrumental electronic score music, and US is no exception. The epic Song of the Whale varies between a swirling array of synthesizers, piano solo, and excellent textural guitar parts.
![]() | The Black Halo by Kamelot
Buy new: $17.98 / Used from: $7.94 I got into these guys years ago with their melodic charging style and Khan's distinctly haunting voice, but now Kamelot has finally written their masterpiece with TBH. I'd be hard pressed to see them top this one, but who knows, they just might pull it off. This here is the second half of their two part concept album, the first of which started with Epica.
![]() | Defenders of the Faith by Judas Priest
Buy new: $7.98 / Used from: $4.57 Coming from my all-time favorite metal band, DotF is the single album that got me into metal in the first place. From the ear-shattering screams of Rob Halford, to the blazing dual-axe assault of Glenn & KK and thunderous hammer-god drumming, this album can release an aura of nostalgia in me that few albums can compare to. Their other albums are almost as good. ROCK HARD, RIDE FREE!!
![]() | Top Gun Soundtrack
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $1.80 Definitely my favorite 80s soundtrack, and the one disc that got me into music in the first place. I mean, come on, it's got "Danger Zone" and "Mighty Wings" in it! You can't go wrong with that. 9 energetic power pop rock songs and one anthemic instrumental played by Steve Stevens of Billy Idol fame make up this excellent collection. Now if only they would release the COMPLETE soundtrack
.
![]() | Hackers
Buy used from: $8.44 And this one is my favorite 90s soundtrack. It's mid-90s techno with soul. Prodigy, Leftfield, Carl Cox, and Orbital give us some amazing pulse-pounding, yet moody tracks that manage to give me goosebumps whenever I hear them.
![]() | Somewhere in Time by Iron Maiden
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $7.99 And here's the album that got me into Maiden. SIT combines the classic Maiden sound with a progressively melodic songwriting sheen through their usage of guitar synthesizers. You can't beat "Wasted Years", "Stranger In A Strange Land", and "Deja Vu". Anything theyve done from the debut up to Seventh Son and then also their new millennium stuff is good too.
![]() | Reise, Reise by Rammstein
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $6.41 Like KMFDM, Rammstein is catchy as hell, and they have a humorous side to them too. Sure it's hard to understand anything they're saying unless you speak German, but this album moves them into more of the orchestral/metal side of industrial, and believe me, it works. Amerika is THE catchiest song Ive heard in a long time. Not for those who only think Du Hast is the only song they ever did.
![]() | Rebel Yell by Billy Idol
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $2.64 Probably my favorite 80s pop/rock album, along with anything by Ultravox, Berlin, and Talk Talk. Idol manages to pull off his best punk meets new wave effort in addition to the guitar stylings of Steve Stevens. Yeah it doesn't have White Wedding, but Rebel Yell more than makes up for that. The self titled debut and Whiplash Smile are also worth hearing.
![]() | Relayer by Yes
Buy used from: $3.25 "Close to the Edge" and "Going For The One" were probably Yes's overall best albums, but I have a personal liking towards this one particular 70s album without Rick Wakeman. The album cover itself describes the mood of this progressive mountain perfectly. 3 songs that take you on a journey through time and interstellar space.
![]() | Oceanborn by Nightwish
Buy used from: $4.72 Nightwish's best delivers a power metal songwriting style spiced with gothic atmospherics and Tarja's operatic vocals. I suppose the newer "Wishmaster" and Century Child are catchier and "Once" is their best produced album, but Oceanborn was the one that blew me out of the water initially years ago. The first three tracks deliver a real BANG!
![]() | Power Windows by Rush
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $4.78 With Rush being my favorite band, it's very difficult to pick an absolute favorite album. But while Moving Pictures & Permanent Waves sit as masterpiece classics, I come back to Windows the most for its stellar songwriting, confident musicianship, and bold 80s sound. And hey, ya gotta love "The Big Money"! Hearing this album always puts me in a good mood.
![]() | The Soft Bulletin by The Flaming Lips
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $3.10 Despite the acquired taste needed for their vocalist at times, anything by these guys is very rewarding musically. In "Soft Bulletin", they capture a certain laid back mood perfectly through a 70s meets 90s alternative pop rock style. Plus, their song titles are just hilarious. Also check out "Clouds Taste Metallic", "Yoshimi", and "Mystics".
![]() | Eliminator by ZZ Top
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $1.88 Perhaps the most consistent classic rock album I've heard, sporting one classic after another after another... until you reach the end and ask "where are the fillers?" I mean, you've got "Sharp Dressed Man", "Give Me All Your Lovin'", "Legs", "I've Got The Six", and "TV Dinners" on one album. What's not to like there? It makes for a perfect nighttime driving album to put on.
![]() | The Greater Wrong of the Right by Skinny Puppy
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $3.44 No, it's not older SP from the late 80s/early 90s, but this album got me to really like the band for what it is: a catchy yet experimentally progressive industrial/electronic outfit that isn't afraid to push its sound into new dark venues. Here on The Greater Wrong, this is what the popular band Linkin Park would sound like if they were actually any good.
![]() | Silent Hill, Vol. 3
Buy new: $51.99 / Used from: $58.69 My favorite soundtrack from this amazing horror series of games. At first I was scared to put on this disc, based on how creepy the games are, but what I got was a surprisingly excellent and chilling indie/electronic score, sounding often like The Gathering on their "Souvenirs" album if they only wrote instrumentals. VERY ambient and certain parts sound musically claustrophobic.
![]() | Bible of Dreams by Juno Reactor
Buy used from: $2.48 Favorite instrumental techno album by far. Famous for their score piece "Mona Lisa Overdrive" in the Matrix movies, this album shows an earlier JR pushing their style by combining different subtle tribal sounds to pulsing beats. Sometimes they even get quiet and eerie. I have yet to check out their other albums, but this one has definitely won me over.
![]() | Subject...Aldo Nova by Aldo Nova
Buy used from: $14.91 Aldo had an awesome guitar sound early on in his brief career, but Subject is where his songwriting excels in spades. Despite the fact that this tries to be a concept album and fails, musically it succeeds and carries a sound all its own. He may be a one hit wonder with the song "Fantasy", but if you bother to check out his albums, they're a fine example of punchy pop rock.
![]() | Burn the Sun by Ark
Prog rock at its most accessible, yet experimental at the same time. Jorn Lande's got a voice that is "love it or hate it" I suppose, but the musicianship is fantastic. Like Mars Volta, these guys are one of the few modern progressive rock bands that doesn't directly copy Dream Theater's style. Also look into the band Pain Of Salvation if you like these guys.
![]() | 7800° Fahrenheit by Bon Jovi
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $3.55 Yeah, I know it's Bon Jovi. He sucks for the most part. Still, before the booming popular days of "Slippery When Wet" and "It's My Life", he actually knew how to rock, and with 7800, the band wrote some really hard-hitting melodic stuff. This is one of the very first cds I bought, proving to me that music doesn't have to be popular to be good. Hell, the band now even hates this one, go figure!
![]() | Wolfmother by Wolfmother
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $4.53 This album takes everything I like about 70s classic rock and adds beefier guitars and a full wall of sound. Perfect for breaking furniture to! If you want to compare them to anything, think parts of Deep Purple mixed with Led Zepplin, Ted Nuggent, White Spirit, and even Boston on occassion. It's simple, yet effective. Certainly fits the definition of "rocking out".
![]() | Master of Puppets by Metallica
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $5.95 And lastly... yep. It's a metal classic for good reason. It seems like all favorite lists have this one somewhere, but I'm adding it since it is indeed a favorite of mine. 'Nuff said.
