By an Amazon.com customer
Blue Velvet (Special Edition)Blue Velvet (Special Edition)
Buy new: $9.49 / Used from: $5.00
The way I classify films is simple: There was before Blue Velvet and After Blue Velvet. Personally, one of the biggest cinematic influences I know of.
8 1/2 - Criterion Collection8 1/2 - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $31.99 / Used from: $13.95
It's a beautiful film, one about the magic of movie making and analyzing one's career. Not one to be missed, it must be seen by every film fan before they die.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2-Disc Collector's Edition)Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2-Disc Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $22.99 / Used from: $7.89
This film here is a timeless classic as well as an original romantic comedy and a beautiful tear jerker. Along with the next two films I mention, they fit the definition of perfection. Great story, script, music and each film leaves me warm when it's over.
AmélieAmélie
Buy used from: $9.93
A modern Fairy Tale. Something about this movie just captivates me. Whether or not it's the humor or just the whole feel to the film, either way, it's timeless and unforgettable.
The Royal Tenenbaums (The Criterion Collection)The Royal Tenenbaums (The Criterion Collection)
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $5.65
The patriarch of a New York family declares that he is dying. What happens next can only be described as some of the most rich and ribald humor I've seen in years. It's a family movie at heart and an ingenious comedy as well.
Fargo (Special Edition)Fargo (Special Edition)
Buy new: $9.49 / Used from: $1.89
Easily one of the strangest thrillers I've seen in a long time. Using humor and horror, the Coen Brothers create an intricate web of characters who in one way or another help or hinder one another. Plus, Frances McDormand is truly excellent in a role that got her an Oscar.
Pulp FictionPulp Fiction
Buy used from: $7.17
There's no denying that Quintin Tarantino's 1994 smash hit left an impact on cinema as well as the world. Everything from its dialogue, to the soundtrack and even the movie poster is iconic in its own way. There will be imitations, but there will always be one Pulp Fiction.
Casablanca (Two-Disc Special Edition)Casablanca (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $20.99 / Used from: $5.49
Up until now, one may assume that I'm just a hipster film snob who doesn't have any respect for classic films. Casablanca still holds up today with such grace and beauty, that it still destroys even the most hard hearted person when Ilsa has to leave Casablanca.
Short Cuts - Criterion CollectionShort Cuts - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $21.49 / Used from: $16.95
Always a pro at the ensemble film, Robert Altman weaves together a tapestry of stories and characters that in one way or another, correlate with each other. The end result is a terrific slice of American cinema that lingers in the viewer's mind.
Fight Club (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)Fight Club (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $24.99 / Used from: $6.91
It's rare that the film adaptation of a terrific book will be any damn good. However, director David Fincher captures the overall grittiness and schizophrenic feel that the book carries with a stylistic eye.
Breathless - Criterion CollectionBreathless - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $32.49 / Used from: $24.99
If Pulp Fiction took the independent film scene by storm, then the same can be said for Breathless and French cinema. Because of Breathless, a new breed of films were made by famous French directors, all with a hard edged intensity almost unheard of in the past. Simply for starting the French New Wave and for being a damn good piece of art, Breathless succeeds on all fronts.
Hannah and Her SistersHannah and Her Sisters
Buy new: $10.49 / Used from: $2.25
One of, if not, the finest film that Woody Allen has produced to date. It works so well when followed with a similar but much more dower yet equally satisfying Crimes and Misdemeanors. This film about a woman who's husband is in love with her sister and the complications that follow never fails to impress or charm the viewer.
The Wizard of Oz (Three-Disc Collector's Edition)The Wizard of Oz (Three-Disc Collector's Edition)
Buy used from: $12.46
As gorgeous as it was when it first came out, this whimsical beauty about a girl in search of her heart's desires and on the run from a wicked witch cannot go wrong. It's simply breathtaking to say the least.
Lost in TranslationLost in Translation
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $0.93
An unexpected beauty. Captures the feeling of solitude in an unfamiliar country and creates characters that are very much lifelike and real. A truly beautiful film.
The Triplets of BellevilleThe Triplets of Belleville
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $2.29
A bicyclist is kidnapped by evil henchmen, an old woman and her dog set out to find him, along the way they meet a trio of eccentric old women who were once famous in the roaring 20's-30's. Oh, and did I mention that they women eat frogs? Belleville is the kind of animated film you rarely see. It's stylish and expressive with hardly any words at all.
The Sting (Universal Legacy Series)The Sting (Universal Legacy Series)
Buy new: $19.99 / Used from: $8.50
The kind of film that is another reminder why films are made. It's so perfect and sly that you cannot help but resist it. The concept is brilliant, the heist even more so. And the ending is truly satisfying.
Beauty and The Beast - Criterion Collection (Restored Edition)Beauty and The Beast - Criterion Collection (Restored Edition)
Buy new: $27.99 / Used from: $18.48
Cocteau is a visionary one of a kind. Beauty and the Beast proves to be one of the most lush and stunning tales known to man, and this adaptation does not tarnish it's reputation.
Me and You and Everyone We KnowMe and You and Everyone We Know
Buy used from: $3.65
July's debut film explores love in the digital age with a wide eyed innocence that is rarely seen in most films. It's almost childlike, even when it details a very adult world. Not everyone's cup of tea, but it's a fresh burst of life.
Requiem for a Dream (Director's Cut)Requiem for a Dream (Director's Cut)
Buy new: $11.49 / Used from: $3.25
Scary, gripping, brutal and unflinching. Not so much an anti drug movie but a character drama that works like the most taut of horror movies. The lives of four people are altered severely by drugs and their dreams are suddenly crushed. It's heart wrenching cinema, and it's chilling to the bone.
It Happened One NightIt Happened One Night
Buy new: $18.99 / Used from: $8.47
A somewhat unexpected gem. The original romantic comedy that unlike many of its predecessors is actually funny. REALLY funny, you're guaranteed to howl with laughter and smile with delight. Plus, the chemistry between the two leads is so perfect.
City Lights (2 Disc Special Edition)City Lights (2 Disc Special Edition)
Buy used from: $49.99
The little Tramp falls in love with a blind flower girl and vows to fund her eye repair surgery by any means necessary. The film has been regarded as Chaplin's best, not only for its haunting score and lush visuals, but because it was Chaplin's final silent film. Oh, and did I mention the ending has been called the greatest ending to a movie in film history?
Beauty and the Beast (Special Platinum Edition)Beauty and the Beast (Special Platinum Edition)
Buy used from: $19.96
Call it childish all you will but Disney really hit one out of the park when they made Beauty and the Beast. It is the kind of film that will soften even the hardest of souls and will captivate both children and adults alike.
My Own Private Idaho - Criterion CollectionMy Own Private Idaho - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $27.49 / Used from: $15.24
Say what you will about Keanu Reeves, but he is not half bad in My Own Private Idaho where he plays a gritty soul with a wealthy father. River Phoenix is haunting as a narcoleptic hustler looking for his mother. I won't say much else, but know that My Own Private Idaho is independent cinema at its best. It's strange and tragic, but isn't life?
Chasing Amy: The Criterion CollectionChasing Amy: The Criterion Collection
Buy new: $15.49 / Used from: $1.99
While his comedies are superb and always feature Smith's witty eye for dialogue, it is his drama, Chasing Amy that leaves the greatest impression on me. It's really an adorable movie, it's the kind of romantic comedy you rarely see.
Toy Story (10th Anniversary Edition)Toy Story (10th Anniversary Edition)
Buy used from: $17.98
A revolutionary movie in a league of its own. As simple as it may seem, this film in fact is a breakthrough in cinema, one that opened new windows and showed filmmakers that the impossible was possible. It's also very heartwarming and cute to boot, so there's that as well.
Lars and the Real GirlLars and the Real Girl
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $2.40
This may be very recent, but I get misty eyed just thinking about Lars and The Real Girl. It's the kind of human comedy that doubles as a touching drama and a reminder that no matter who we love, it is our job to give love back.
