L.A. Confidential (Two-Disc Special Edition)L.A. Confidential (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $7.22
The easiest choice on this list is at the top. Quite simply the perfect movie. This film has a great cast, great plot, and the atmosphere of it is feels enough like noir and authentic at the same time it's amazing.
Invasion of the Body SnatchersInvasion of the Body Snatchers
Buy new: $11.49 / Used from: $7.00
The greatest horror film of all time, with at least 3 good remakes that I know about, a tv series, and at least 2 bad remakes all spawned from one masterpiece. It's great when a movie is relevant socially, actually scary, and fun to watch at the same time.
Do The Right Thing - Criterion CollectionDo The Right Thing - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $35.99 / Used from: $9.99
One of the most provoking movies ever made; it's near impossible to watch this and not have a reaction. Each time I watch it, it retains that effect which is really saying something. For anybody that doesn't like this movie because they don't like the characters, they are missing the point.
Unforgiven (Two-Disc Special Edition)Unforgiven (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $20.99 / Used from: $2.94
Un-freaking-believably good. This Western manages to take cliches from other westerns, make them seem real and original, and combines exciting action with an underlying impact of a man losing his humanity. Good on so many levels.
The 'BurbsThe 'Burbs
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $5.87
This film probably looks the most out of place on this list, but comedy is often the most difficult genre to pull off. Everything about this movie is hilarious from start to finish, and unlike most it stays funny on repeat viewings. "I hate cul-de-sacs, there's only one way out."
Seven Samurai - 3 Disc Remastered Edition (Criterion Collection Spine # 2)Seven Samurai - 3 Disc Remastered Edition (Criterion Collection Spine # 2)
Buy new: $32.99 / Used from: $26.74
Granted, I've only seen half a dozen Kurosawa films, but I'm not holding my breath on seeing one better than this (though "The Bad Sleep Well" was closest). This film seems like one that would appeal to a very small niche of people, but show it to anybody that enjoys good movies and I am confident they would love it.
Vanilla SkyVanilla Sky
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $0.01
This entry is a tie between Vanilla Sky and Abre Los Ojos. Having seen the American version first and the most times, I listed that one, however I am almost positive had I seen the original first I would have been appalled at the remake. Both are almost shot for shot exactly the same, this is a very sad film that gets better with each viewing.
Mulholland DriveMulholland Drive
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $5.69
If you don't like David Lynch or having to figure out what a movie is about, you probably won't like this one (try Blue Velvet though, it's a bit more accessible). For everybody left in the room, Mulholland Drive is a near perfect film that is so amazing to immerse yourself in, that when you do come up with an explanation it's both satisfying and unnecessary.
28 Days Later (Widescreen Edition)28 Days Later (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $1.97
The greatest horror movie to come out since Invasion of the Body Snatchers is this gem that transcended its genre. Introducing the fast "zombies," the rage virus, making it on a smaller budget all contribute to the effect, but the best thing is great characters, scary moments, and an erie mood that constantly lingers.
ShaneShane
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $4.44
Westerns are great, and the best one of an era is Shane. No movie better shows the reluctant gunfighter, and no western makes the surround characters so developed that it feels grounded in realism and yet romanticized simultaneously.
Jaws (30th Anniversary Edition)Jaws (30th Anniversary Edition)
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $2.83
The scariest movie ever made, effecting more people than scientifically feasible. Just as entertaining and quotable as it is scary.
Dark City (Director's Cut)Dark City (Director's Cut)
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $3.01
The horror/sci-fi/noir world of Dark City is something that must be experienced to truly understand. One of the most unique movies on the list.
The Edge (Widescreen Edition)The Edge (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $8.49 / Used from: $2.93
Most fans of this movie point to the excellent script by David Mamet, but the real draw of this film is the banter between Baldwin and Hopkins. Two great performances in one of the simplest yet successful films on the list.
Tombstone - The Director's Cut (Vista Series)Tombstone - The Director's Cut (Vista Series)
Buy new: $21.49 / Used from: $6.00
Another western, but very different from the other two. This film succeeds mainly due to the performance of Val Kilmer, the action/big budget mentality of the shootouts, and the historical truthfulness behind the picture.
The Truman Show (Special Collector's Edition)The Truman Show (Special Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $2.50
A concept film, where the idea itself provides a unique setting that permeates every aspect of the film. The concept is interesting on its own, subject to deeper conjectures, and Ed Harris as a god like figure is always great.
Cool Hand Luke (Deluxe Edition)Cool Hand Luke (Deluxe Edition)
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $6.51
My favorite actor in his best movie, Newman as Luke makes a character that doesn't depend on sympathy to resonate with the audience. The fact is that Luke is likable; this elevates him with the prisoners in the film as well as the viewers.
1776 (Restored Director's Cut)1776 (Restored Director's Cut)
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $10.22
One of two musicals to crack this list, this film is surprisingly historically accurate (once you remove all the singing). The songs enhance the viewing as they are catchy and fun, to match humorous dialogue throughout.
JFK - Director's Cut (Two-Disc Special Edition)JFK - Director's Cut (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy used from: $8.99
The ultimate conspiracy movie succeeds because it is grounded in true events. No matter how you feel going into the movie, one can't help but wonder when placed with all the evidence by director Oliver Stone.
The Godfather - The Coppola RestorationThe Godfather - The Coppola Restoration
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $5.50
I can see the arguments that this is the greatest film of all time. On top of that, I can see it as one of my favorite films. Why so low then? That's how highly I think of the movies ahead of this.
The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou - Criterion Collection (2-Disc Special Edition)The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou - Criterion Collection (2-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $19.99 / Used from: $4.99
Wes Anderson is a director who, if you like one of his movies, you'll probably like them all. The inverse is also true. I fall into the former category, but find this to be his film I return to the most often. I think its undoubtedly his funniest film, and while Tennenbaums does leave me sadder, this too has an effect on me.
Pulp Fiction (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)Pulp Fiction (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $5.76
Sometimes it seems like every film I've seen since this one came out has been attempting to recreate something from this movie. In a way, it's really annoying, because now certain plot twists seem more inevitable than shocking. Still, it's an amazing film and well deserving of its place in film history.
The Sting (Universal Legacy Series)The Sting (Universal Legacy Series)
Buy new: $16.00 / Used from: $9.74
A funny and exciting film that hasn't aged a bit. Newman and Redford are forever associated together for two films that are among the best ever made.
Blade Runner (Four-Disc Collector's Edition)Blade Runner (Four-Disc Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $14.50
A movie that appears to be more highly regarded each year that goes by. Part of that is due to the initial disappointment in the reception the movie received, but mostly it's due to the amazing Final Cut of the film now on dvd.
Rear Window (Universal Legacy Series)Rear Window (Universal Legacy Series)
Buy new: $16.00 / Used from: $14.99
I put this copy down to have a picture, but really you should just buy the Masterpiece collection it comes in. Hitchcock is phenomenal, and the suspense he generates in a film like this is thick. Grace Kelly in her prime as well.
Dumbo (Big Top Edition)Dumbo (Big Top Edition)
Buy used from: $17.99
I didn't watch as many Disney movies a kid, so watching a lot of them for the first time now doesn't elevate many of them to the same level as it probably does for others. This film is the exception though, very touching story.
The StandThe Stand
Buy used from: $21.02
A made for tv movie in the top 40? Yes, if it's based on a great book, if it's almost completely faithful to that book, and it uses quality actors in filling the roles. It has to be good if 6 hours of it doesn't scare off annual viewings.
The Vanishing - Criterion CollectionThe Vanishing - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $21.49 / Used from: $13.95
Bless the Criterion Collection for introducing me to foreign gems like this one here. The ending pushes this film from fun thriller to all time classic. On a side note, I tend to have good luck picking random titles from the CC for a movie night and would recommend others doing the same.
OnceOnce
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $2.75
The other musical on this list, Once is one of the only musicals you'll see where the music actually fits within the context of the story. On top of that, it's a sweet and simple story with two very likable leads.
Big Trouble in Little China (Special Edition)Big Trouble in Little China (Special Edition)
Buy used from: $2.80
John Carpenter and Kurt Russell are two of the best at creating fun/memorable characters. This is another of those movies that is just so weird you have to check it out. Fun movies are often overlooked on "best movie" lists and I don't know why. (See the Thing as well.)
Hoop Dreams - Criterion CollectionHoop Dreams - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $23.99 / Used from: $10.99
One of the most thorough documentaries ever made, this film follows around 2 boys with dreams of playing in the NBA for 5 years. It is real drama, and you don't know how it will play out until they show you.
American Psycho (Uncut Killer Collector's Edition)American Psycho (Uncut Killer Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $1.85
One of the funniest movies I've ever seen, though I don't believe it's a comedy. This film, more than most others, is NOT for everyone. If you have a dark sense of humor, fondly remember the 1980's, you will enjoy it.
Being John MalkovichBeing John Malkovich
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $5.81
Some movies are weird for the sake of being weird. This one is weird, but it's also well crafted. Both John Cusak and John Malcovich appeark on the edge of going crazy in this movie, even before the hijinks begin. Definitely a movie you'll never forget.
KidsKids
Buy new: $7.49 / Used from: $2.58
Of all the films on this list, this one is not for everyone. Larry Clark is a controversial filmmaker, some would call pornographer, who prefers using teenagers in serious situations. In my estimation, the results are powerful, and this film edges out Wassup Rockers and Bully as his best.
61*61*
Buy new: $5.98 / Used from: $1.14
A great movie about the greatest game in the world. This is a true story, played by two actors perfectly suited to their roles, and so entertaining that even Yankee haters like myself enjoy it. The only thing that keeps it from being higher is when it slips into melodrama for awhile in the middle.
The Dirty Dozen (Two-Disc Special Edition)The Dirty Dozen (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $24.49 / Used from: $4.00
This movie is similar to Seven Samurai in many ways. Both involve putting together a group to take on a suicide mission. Both are very successful with big name actors filling the roles. Both also transcend their genres and are well liked by anybody that gives them a shot.
Aliens (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)Aliens (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $5.29
James Cameron used to make the best action movies in the world. What happened? Aliens take the great concept from the first film and perfects it. Strike that: it escalates it. Everything in this film is more intense making it the rare sequel to pass the original.
Unbreakable (Two-Disc Vista Series)Unbreakable (Two-Disc Vista Series)
Buy new: $10.49 / Used from: $1.00
An amazing superhero movie not based on a comic. This film succeeds because of all the things that Shymalan is good at, yet because of its already outlandish premise, doesn't suffer the other drawbacks his later work has produced.
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $7.00
Even if you know the end is coming, it doesn't make it any less dramatic. The ultimate buddy movie, provides as many laughs as it does anything else. Just don't count the bullets at the end.
12 Angry Men (50th Anniversary Edition)12 Angry Men (50th Anniversary Edition)
Buy new: $8.49 / Used from: $7.37
Henry Fonda anchors this movie that celebrates the legal system, and tells a complete story about a murder and trial only through a conversation a group of men have afterward.
The Aviator (Two-Disc Widescreen Edition)The Aviator (Two-Disc Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $6.49 / Used from: $0.01
True stories always provide for the best drama. This is a long biopic about Howard Hughes, and when it ends the only think you can think is, "where's part two?" Great film, great performances all around.
