![]() | Solaris - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $28.99 / Used from: $16.95 My favorite film. And my favorite director. To me this plays like a perfectly paced dream.

![]() | The Thing (Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $4.49 For some reason I cannot stop watching this film over and over. There are three things that propel this movie to the top of my list. One, the awesomeness of Kurt Russells character (and that hat). Two, the incredible special effects. Three, the ambiguity. At no point in the movie do you ever know who is the thing (and if you do when it happened) Oh yeah the score is sweet too

![]() | Akira
Buy used from: $10.21 One of anime and animations crowning jewels. Part of the attraction to film is placing yourself in a fictional world where you would to a certain degree like to exist. The answer is yes I would like to belong to a bike gang, pop pills, and then be able to fly and blow up stuff with my mind (in the future Japan). Oh yeah this might also have my favorite score.

![]() | In the Mood for Love - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $32.49 / Used from: $22.67 Is it a love story? Is it a tale of infidelity? Is it possible to tell? From one dreamy vignette to another In the Mood for Love is a love story never pinned down through time or space. The ending both solidifies and disintegrates any sense you can make of what you just saw.

![]() | Le Samourai - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $21.99 / Used from: $16.49 Jef Costello is the coolest character in movie history. A modern-age French samurai/sociopath gangster assassin (yes I want a business card that says that). The minimalism in form and function of this movie blows my mind. The films of Melville are a reflection of America (and the place the gangster genre holds in our hearts).

![]() | Psycho (Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $8.40 Much has been written about Psycho, like how it broke so many moulds or started the slasher genre. I think most of what makes this film standout, and why I love it, is it seems the Hitchcock said something like You want low budget horror? Screw it. Give me a little money and some time on the lot. He then took his TV crew and made a masterpiece.

![]() | By Brakhage - Anthology - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $32.49 / Used from: $22.00 This is not a movie but a collection of short films. I have not concluded which of these is my favorite (although I lean towards The Stars are Beautiful). All I know is that when I first saw Brakhage my concept of film shifted
. a lot. Brakhage failed to become a poet of words but succeeded beyond belief as a visual poet. His films concentrate on cavemanly basic subjects; sex and death.

![]() | There Will Be Blood (Two-Disc Special Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $21.99 / Used from: $4.29 The movie is three hours long and the best words can do is its about a guy who drills for oil. You dont know any more about Daniel Plainview at the end than you do at the beginning. After the half way mark you understand that DDLs character is completely insane. All I wanted to see was Plainview doing some more ridiculous stuff, and the ending does not disappoint.

![]() | La Jetee/Sans Soleil (Criterion Collection)
Buy new: $32.49 / Used from: $19.95 This is simply a film comprised of still shots, with voice over, about a dystopian post-apocalyptic world. The simple veneer dissolves when you consider that La Jetée tackles love and time travel all in 28 minutes.

![]() | Fight Club
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $4.07 I can quote this entire movie in my sleep.
