The Guy Maddin Collection (Twilight of the Ice Nymphs / The Heart of the World / Archangel)The Guy Maddin Collection (Twilight of the Ice Nymphs / The Heart of the World / Archangel)
Buy new: $31.49 / Used from: $14.47
(B for just Archangel) Another strange Maddin production, this time a sound film during WWI. It's a lot more low-key than most of his other material, but still intriguing.
An American CrimeAn American Crime
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $1.68
(C) A horrifying true crime story, but with too many missteps to totally work, especially in the oft cheesy second half.
In a Lonely PlaceIn a Lonely Place
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $7.20
(B-) A well-acted but somewhat slow and not entirely remarkable noir film. It's enjoyable if you like that kind of thing.
Fox Horror Classics Collection (The Lodger / Hangover Square / The Undying Monster)Fox Horror Classics Collection (The Lodger / Hangover Square / The Undying Monster)
Buy new: $22.49 / Used from: $20.39
(B+ for just Lodger) A stylish, superior remake of Hitchcock's effective original. An underappreciated thriller from the 40s.
The Bank JobThe Bank Job
Buy new: $14.49 / Used from: $1.79
(B+) A thoroughly absorbing, supposedly true caper story, though it takes a while to get going. Statham is fun, as usual.
The Long GoodbyeThe Long Goodbye
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $3.52
(B+) Altman's satiric adaptation of the classic novel is quite entertaining and surprising, though I don't buy it thematically. It's be nice to have a more faithful, straight adaptation, but this is good for what it is.
Angel FaceAngel Face
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $10.25
(C) A completely generic, somewhat bland noir made notable only by Mitchum's typically effective performance.
The Thief of Bagdad - Criterion CollectionThe Thief of Bagdad - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $32.49 / Used from: $23.99
(A-) A massively entertaining, impressively made old fantasy/adventure film. It's not so PC nowadays, but it holds up beautifully as entertainment.
Hellevator: The Bottled FoolsHellevator: The Bottled Fools
Buy new: $29.95 / Used from: $8.47
(C+) Japanese horror pic about a dystopian society where a group of disparate individuals are trapped in an elevator. Has its moments, but it drags a bit at other times.
Nightmare DetectiveNightmare Detective
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $3.00
(B-) Tsukamoto film comes off as a mix of Nightmare on Elm Street and The Cell. The story is a rehash and the characters cliched, but Tsukamoto's always intoxicating visuals make it worth a watch.
Dr. GigglesDr. Giggles
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $6.69
(B-) An amusing comic slasher from the early 90s. Drake is a delight as the killer.
The Caine Mutiny (Collector's Edition)The Caine Mutiny (Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $8.99
(B) A somewhat slow but well-acted and executed military/court drama. Bogart plays an atypical role very well.
The FallThe Fall
Buy new: $19.99 / Used from: $10.10
(A) A mind-bogglingly gorgeous and visionary film from the maker of The Cell. What's more, this has an intriguing, touching story and likable characters, unlike The Cell, though it is the spectacular scenery that carries it.
A Snake of JuneA Snake of June
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $3.02
(B-) Disturbing "erotic" thriller from Tsukamoto. Like most of his films, it doesn't totally come together, but it's intriguing enough to be worth seeing.
Intolerable Cruelty (Widescreen Edition)Intolerable Cruelty (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $8.49 / Used from: $0.01
(C) Coen's make another straight comedy, which is usually a mistake for them. Intolerable Cruelty is inoffesive, but it doesn't really entertain either. It's just there.
Punch-Drunk Love (Two Disc Special Edition) (Superbit Collection)Punch-Drunk Love (Two Disc Special Edition) (Superbit Collection)
Buy new: $19.99 / Used from: $0.79
(B) PT Anderson's Romantic Comedy/Drama plays as a weird revision of Sandler's career, throwing his typical character into a more real world. It's unusual, and Sandler is quite good, though it's all a bit of a novelty.
Boogie NightsBoogie Nights
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $6.61
(A) PT Anderson's breakout film is a very funny and mocking but still sympathetic portrayl of a porn "family". The cast is fantastic, Anderson's direction is always energetic and the whole enterprise is just a great deal of fun.
Rubber's LoverRubber's Lover
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $7.83
(C+) This disturbing Japanese tech-horror pic is stylish and disturbing but is also so damn repetitive that the effect withers well before the credits.
Mutiny on the BountyMutiny on the Bounty
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $5.66
(A-) This classic early 30s adventure pic is a terrific example of the era. Mutiny on the Bounty is about as entertaining as films from the era get, and it has surprising moral depth and ambiguity.
Escape From AlcatrazEscape From Alcatraz
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $4.05
(B) A methodical but intriguing prison pic from Siegel and Eastwood. It may not grab you at all times, but it's always watchable.
Swingers (Miramax Collector's Series)Swingers (Miramax Collector's Series)
Buy new: $11.49 / Used from: $2.03
(B) Comedy/Drama about young singles in California is generally funny and insightful. On the downside, you can't help but be embarassed for the characters, though that's half the point.
MagnoliaMagnolia
Buy new: $24.49 / Used from: $5.95
(B-) PT Anderson's follow up to Boogie Nights is grandiose and self-important w/o justifying why it thinks so highly of itself. The terrific performances largely mitigate the films unearned ambitions and make it generally watchable, but it falls far short of what Anderson wanted it to be.
The Iron RoseThe Iron Rose
Buy new: $22.49 / Used from: $8.77
(C+) Rollin's dreamlike horror has strong visuals and atmosphere, but it never really goes anywhere.
ChaosChaos
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $1.97
(B) Ringu director Nakata makes a Hitchcockian psych thriller. The extremely elaborate plot is very intriguing, though Nakata's style is tad flat and distancing.
Mother of TearsMother of Tears
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $2.45
(D) Argento's long awaited follow up to Suspiria and Inferno is painfully bad. It lacks the strengths of those films while multiplying the flaws in the plot/dialog/acting. It has decent gore and scenery but is painfully silly as a whole.
Crimes and MisdemeanorsCrimes and Misdemeanors
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $5.00
(A-) Allen's bleakly comedic drama serves as a beautiful distillation of Allen's nihilistic view of humanity. It's also strongly performed and has always interesting dialogue. Probably the best flim I've seen from him.
NashvilleNashville
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $3.53
(B-) Altman's sprawling drama/musical has incredible scope and is quite unique, though it's not always involving. I find it more admirable than enjoyable.
The Hustler (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)The Hustler (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $8.84
(A-) An extremely dark drama with elegant B&W cinemascope and a breakout performance from Newman. He's excellent, as are Scott and Gleason. Definitely something of a classic.
Night of the HuntedNight of the Hunted
Buy used from: $11.98
(B) Another dream-like, poetic horror film from Rollin, this time about a skyscraper filled with mental defectives. This is a hypnotic, sometimes touching pic, but Rollin's excess use of exploitation conventions, particularly gratuitious nudity, detract from the effect.
