Falling DownFalling Down
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $1.00
(B+) This movie piles it on too much and can't quite balance the black humor and the serious plot at times. Taken a bit further each of these problems might kill it, but "Falling Down" stays just inside the lines and is a bleak, effective thriller, and it reminds us that we can't afford to ignore Schumacher entirely, no matter how much junk he makes.
The Amityville HorrorThe Amityville Horror
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $0.10
(C+) This movie has earned itself a fairly bad rep over the years, but I think it's a fair bit of hokey fun, if not what I'd call "good". Also, that Margot Kidder was real purty back then hehehehe...
Dracula Has Risen from the GraveDracula Has Risen from the Grave
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $3.92
(C+) More standard Hammer Dracula stuff, though it's severely hurt by the absence of Peter Cushing, not too mention Veronica Carlson's wearing altogether too much clothes. What is she, a nun? Still, it passed the time well enough, and has the standard Hammer charm, if in a smaller portion.
Blade Runner (The Director's Cut)Blade Runner (The Director's Cut)
Buy used from: $1.11
(A) No matter how many times I see this it still sucks me like few other films can. And I disagree with general critics, I think this has got a lotta heart and human interest to it. In short, it's still one of my favorite films, and I can't wait for the big, final DVD set later this year.
Kill Baby KillKill Baby Kill
Buy used from: $3.48
(B-) A fairly effective gothic horror film from Bava. Obviously in the Hammer tradition, but still distinctly Bava-esque at the same time. May rate even higher after seeing it on a decent DVD, should it get one.
Young FrankensteinYoung Frankenstein
Buy new: $8.49 / Used from: $3.68
(B+) Not 100% consistent, though it's never grating the way every other Brooks film I've seen can be at times, but it's a lot of fun with great comic performances even at the times when the written material isn't anything special. Wilder is one of the greatest comic actors ever, and this is one of his best performances.
The GameThe Game
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $3.02
(B+) Probably Fincher's weakest film (I'm an Alien 3 fan), but it's still a very slick, twisty thriller. Not remotely plausible, of course, but that's part of the fun. Its main weakness is, as in Panic Room, a lack of heart, at least through most of the film, but it works well enough as spectacle to be good entertainment.
RepulsionRepulsion
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $5.46
(B) Polanksi's first English language feauture and his first urban paranoia film. Fairly ahead of its time and quite eerie at moments. Too bad the DVD is horrendous, hopefully Criterion will get ahold of it someday.
Zatoichi the Blind Swordsman, Vol. 1 - The Tale of ZatoichiZatoichi the Blind Swordsman, Vol. 1 - The Tale of Zatoichi
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $2.99
(B) A fun Japanese swordplay film with some good characters. I look forward to seeing some of the other films.
LeprechaunLeprechaun
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $2.72
(D+) Yeah, it's supposed to be stupid and all, but just being really bad and stupid doesn't automatically make a film funny. The leprechauns antics are vaguely amusing for a while, but he wears thin and the rest of the movie is quite grating.
The Amityville Horror (Widescreen Special Edition)The Amityville Horror (Widescreen Special Edition)
Buy new: $10.49 / Used from: $0.88
(C+) Like the original, this is very reflective of its era. It's not what I'd call good, but you could do a lot worse, and it earns some points for being derivative of a number of horror film trends, rather than just one. The director looks like he might have some talent, though he seems to lose control of the material a lot here. Perhaps he'll get better.
Hour of the Wolf (Vargtimmen)Hour of the Wolf (Vargtimmen)
Buy used from: $4.50
(D) I've enjoyed the other Bergman films I've seen, but, this one was painful. It's hard to imagine a film more representative of what go wrong with an art film than "Hour of the Wolf". Endless, elliptical monologues that go nowhere, overwhelming pretention, no story to speak of, vagueness which tries to pass itself of as intelligence etc.
Requiem for a HeavyweightRequiem for a Heavyweight
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $7.42
(B) I wish I coulda seen the original, but this version is good in and of itself. It's got your standard Serling mix of populist sentimentalism and cynicism topped off with his punchy and hard-bitten, if not always believable dialogue. Good stuff, though not the cheeriest thing you're gonna see.
Twitch Of The Death Nerve (a.k.a. Bay Of Blood)Twitch Of The Death Nerve (a.k.a. Bay Of Blood)
Buy used from: $28.50
(C+) Has cool, graphic deaths, but this slasher precursor ain't got much else going. The plot is about the worst I've seen in an Italian horror film (no small feat), the black humor doesn't work and Bava's direction/photography are uneven, with endless zooms. Again, the kills got for a lot in a film like this, but it's pretty dubious otherwise.
Amadeus - Director's Cut (Two-Disc Special Edition)Amadeus - Director's Cut (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $20.49 / Used from: $6.50
(A) Still a long-time favorite, and perhaps my pick for best movie of the 80s. Abraham carries the film with his brilliant, multi-faceted performance as the tortured, vengeful Salieri, and the film is top-notch in all other regards as well.
Soylent GreenSoylent Green
Buy used from: $7.00
(B) Quite entertaining with a nicely bleak vision of an overpopulated future. Heston is fun, as he usually is in this kinda thing, and it's sorta different, since it mixes sci-fi and detective genres.
The Virgin Spring - Criterion CollectionThe Virgin Spring - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $31.99 / Used from: $22.95
(B+) A good companion piece to Bergman's earlier "Seventh Seal". A bleak and evocative film of violence and vengeance in medieval europe.
Quatermass Xperiment [VHS]Quatermass Xperiment [VHS]
Buy new: $17.08 / Used from: $8.87
(B+) Years ahead of most of the other sci-fi/horror films from the era both in terms of intelligence and darkness. Needs a DVD release.
The Lost Skeleton of CadavraThe Lost Skeleton of Cadavra
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $5.98
(B+) Often very funny and always charming 50 b-movie spoof. A little overlong, perhaps, but still amusing.
Blazing Saddles (30th Anniversary Special Edition)Blazing Saddles (30th Anniversary Special Edition)
Buy new: $6.49 / Used from: $2.13
(B) Wildly uneven and the ending doesn't work, but this has enough great parts to carry it.
The ArrivalThe Arrival
Buy used from: $6.27
(B+) Quite an underappreciated sci-fi/horror film. The fx are badly dated now, but it's very tense and well-done otherwise.
Dr. No (Special Edition)Dr. No (Special Edition)
Buy used from: $1.45
(B-) First time I've watched a Connery Bond film in years, and while it certainly ain't my favorite thing, it's pretty decent. Farily fun stuff.
X - The UnknownX - The Unknown
Buy used from: $17.93
(B-) An obvious "Quatermass Xperiment" imitation, and though it falls short of that film on all fronts it's still quite solid in its own right.
The Chronicles of Riddick - Pitch Black (Widescreen Unrated Director's Cut)The Chronicles of Riddick - Pitch Black (Widescreen Unrated Director's Cut)
Buy new: $9.49 / Used from: $1.25
(B+) A very solid sci-fi horror film from Twohy and company with, wonder of wonders, a very good performance from Vin Diesel. It moves slow, but it's pleasantly atmospheric throughout, and actually uses this time to create some interesting characters.
Harakiri - Criterion CollectionHarakiri - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $28.99 / Used from: $22.47
(A) A fantastic samurai drama, though incredibly dark. First-rate on all fronts. The seppuku scene that leads into the central story of the film is one of the most difficult-to-watch scenes I've ever come across.
PatternsPatterns
Buy used from: $16.97
(B) Serling penned study on power and power struggle. It's a tad heavy handed at times, as he often is, but he, once again, makes it work anyway.
Logan's RunLogan's Run
Buy used from: $2.79
(B-) An easy target for those who think that mocking outdated things proves their sophistication, but this is still a fairly fun, lively sci-fi film with charmingly outmoded effects. It totally loses steam in the final 30 minutes, however.
Forbidden Planet (Two-Disc Special Edition)Forbidden Planet (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $11.49 / Used from: $10.94
(B+) Occasionally a tad slow, but this is, overall, a very fine sci-fi film with an intriguing story and very cool fx, for the day.
The Day the Earth Stood StillThe Day the Earth Stood Still
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $2.44
(B-) Fairly interesting early "serious" sci-fi film, though not much actually happens.
The FacultyThe Faculty
Buy new: $10.49 / Used from: $3.33
(B) I must admit, I like this film quite a lot. This Williamson script is actually a lot better and more clever than his more famed "Scream" script, though nothing here can match that film's classic opening. Still, a solid horror/horror parody with atypically appealing characters for such a production, though it still falls to some of the stand teen-horror pitfalls.
EquilibriumEquilibrium
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $2.46
(B) A severely goofy movie, but I could still get into it, so it proves to be a fair bit of derivative fun. Not one of Bale's better performances, but he still holds it all together. A lesser actor would've allowed this one to be a total laugher.
THX 1138 - The Director's Cut (Two-Disc Special Edition)THX 1138 - The Director's Cut (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $20.49 / Used from: $2.95
(B-) A surprisingly mature and even arty film from Lucas, but it never totally came alive for me. It's kinda moderately interesting the whole way through, but that's about it.
Zatoichi the Blind Swordsman, Vol. 2 - The Tale of Zatoichi ContinuesZatoichi the Blind Swordsman, Vol. 2 - The Tale of Zatoichi Continues
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $4.94
(B) Not much different from the first, which makes it a solid Japanese swordplay film.
