No Country for Old Men [Blu-ray]No Country for Old Men [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $22.49 / Used from: $9.69
This one has a dark and bleak backdrop, not surprising since it's from the Coen Brothers. It stars Javier Bardem in a chilling Bad Guy performance and Tommy Lee Jones as an aging sheriff trying to solve a series of crimes, against an evil he "may not very well be equal to." Won 4 Academy Awards, including Best Picture.

Gary Cooper is fantastic in his role as a sheriff in a town of cowardly citizens. Up against a ruthless gang of killers, in the hour of his greatest need, everyone in the town deserts him after promising to stand by him. Co-stars Grace Kelley. Story told in real time previously seen in only a few films of the era such as Rope (1948) and The Set-Up (1949). Stanley Kramer is an uncredited producer.
The Man with No Name Trilogy (A Fistful of Dollars, For A Few Dollars More, The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly)The Man with No Name Trilogy (A Fistful of Dollars, For A Few Dollars More, The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly)
Buy new: $14.49 / Used from: $12.35
If I was on a desert island and could only pick one boxed set to watch ‘til the end of time, it would be "The Man With No Name" trilogy by Sergio Leone. Leone knows what makes up a good Western and captures it uniquely like no other director. He famously took close-ups to a new level. He maintained integrity while adding a dash of tongue-in-cheek humor. Starring a young and dashing Clint Eastwood.
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid [Blu-ray]Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid [Blu-ray]

Made at a time in cinematic history when two dashing leading men, each capable of enthralling the movie-going public in his own right, boldly acted side-by-side with each other in a film that would quickly take its place as one of the greatest Westerns ever made. Paul Newman and Robert Redford, co-starring in this classic buddy movie with a Western theme, made movie history.
Once Upon a Time in the WestOnce Upon a Time in the West

Another gem by Italian director Sergio Leone, filmed in Spain, Italy and Utah. Four people whose intricate lives intertwine weave a rich tapestry of a tale. Features Leone's trademark gorgeous scenery and cinematography.
TombstoneTombstone

Lawmaker Wyatt Earp and his brothers attempt to tame the Wild West's outlaws and towns like Tombstone. Stellar cast includes an unforgettable performance by Val Kilmer as Doc Holiday, Kurt Russell as Wyatt Earp, and a chillingly memorable performance by Michael Biehn as Johnny Ringo. An enjoyable tale of events leading up to the legendary Gunfight at the O.K. Corral. For fans of Wyatt Earp.
Stagecoach (Two-Disc Special Edition)Stagecoach (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy used from: $10.29
Worth seeing for the stuntwork alone by Yakima Canutt in the famous scene where the coach is being chased by the Indians. John Wayne's on-screen personna was often based on Canutt's real one, and the two developed stunt and screen fighting techniques together. This movie began the long working relationship between John Ford, one of the most influential directors in movie history, and John Wayne.
The Outlaw Josey WalesThe Outlaw Josey Wales

This vengeance Western is well worth watching. Fans of Clint Eastwood will know it. Clint stars as a Missouri farmer who joins the Confederacy and ends up on the run from the Union that killed his family. The movie deals with complex issues like war crimes, the Civil War, and the Anti Hero. Nominated for an Oscar. Especially enjoyable for Civil War and Western buffs.

In this made-for-TV movie miniseries, Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones star as two former Texas rangers and cowboys who organize one last 2,500-mile cattle drive and get more than they bargained for. Angelica Huston plays the love of Gus's life, whom he never marries. These characters endured hard lives without complaint. An emotional tale. Nominated for 19 Emmys and won 7.
The Searchers [Blu-ray]The Searchers [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $6.75
Epic film by director John Ford starring John Wayne. Wayne plays a Civil War veteran who spends years looking for his niece, kidnapped by Indians. When he discovers she has been assimilated into the Indian tribe, his motives become increasingly questionable. An unflinching look at racism and genocide toward Native Americans. Ford's movie influenced films such as Lawrence of Arabia.
Dances with Wolves - Extended Cut (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)Dances with Wolves - Extended Cut (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $15.99 / Used from: $6.45
This film will not appeal to everyone. It has director Kevin Costner's signature epic style, in which no detail is lost. It appeals to me. There has never been another movie like it. Similar to The Searchers in that it deals with the uneasy relationship between Native Americans and the Old West populace. A love story and the tale of one man's journey of self-discovery. Won 7 Oscars.
The Magnificent Seven (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)The Magnificent Seven (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)

Rio Bravo [Blu-ray]Rio Bravo [Blu-ray]

John Wayne as a small-town sheriff who enlists the help of a drunk, a cripple, and a young gunfighter to hold in jail the brother of the local bad guy. Directed by John Ford. Notable for its almost complete absence of close-ups. Features a long opening with no dialogue. Many feel this is the Western others should be judged by. Tiomkin's music influenced Sergio Leone's "A Fistful of Dollars" score.
Wyatt Earp [Blu-ray]Wyatt Earp [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $7.13
This one is a personal favorite of mine. One has to appreciate director Kevin Costner's epic story-telling style to enjoy this insightful look into Wyatt Earp's life. Costner, who also plays Earp, is so much how I would picture the real Earp that in watching the movie it feels like I am watching Earp himself. The casting is not perfect, but this one is highly recommended for fans of Wyatt Earp.
The Ox-Bow IncidentThe Ox-Bow Incident
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $5.18
The Ox-Bow Incident is a little-known, must-see Western about a lynch mob. Made in 1943, it was nominated for an Oscar. Done in entirely black-and-white. Stellar cast, great script and scenery. This one will stay with you long after you've watched it.

Will PennyWill Penny
Buy new: $9.98 / Used from: $4.25
Arguably Charlton Heston's finest performance ever. An aging, nomadic cowboy gets a job on a large cattle ranch only to find his isolated cabin is already occupied by a woman and her young son. He has to deal with the sadistic Quint family and reconcile his desire for privacy with a newly discovered desire for family life. Heston said this was his favorite film in which he appeared.
