![]() | Metropolis (Restored Authorized Edition)
Buy new: $22.49 / Used from: $13.94 Lang Masterpiece.
Clearly Fritz Lang's best work. This is the best silent feature ever filmed, but large sections of the film have been lost forever, but the remaining sections put together a fantastic story and create a futuristic world not duplicated for decades.
|
![]() | M - 2 Disc Special Edition - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $31.99 / Used from: $21.89 Lang Great Work.
Coupled with "Metropolis," "M" could stand up as one of the best 1-2 punches in film history. Very dark for its time, it manages to show the universal contempt for child molesters. Peter Lorre gives a hauntingly masterful performance.
|
![]() | Woman In the Moon
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $16.00 Lang Great Work.
Not quite as impressive as the other Lang masterpieces, "Woman in the Moon" nevertheless stands as a landmark in science fiction. A bit dated for the modern viewer, the film captured the minds of many in 1931. It's a good, but not fantastic Lang picture.
|
![]() | Spies
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $16.99 Underrated Lang Film.
Another one of Lang's silent masterpieces, the American version of the film was chopped in half from the original German picture. The cinematography is remarkably mature for 1928, and this crime thriller doesn't get the attention it deserves from fans of Lang.
|
![]() | Unforgiven
Buy used from: $2.54 Eastwood Masterpiece.
With "Unforgiven," Clint managed to take a long dead genre and pave the way for the Western Renaissance. The fine script remained untouched for several decades before Eastwood optioned it, eventually signing on Gene Hackman and Morgan Freeman.
|
![]() | Letters from Iwo Jima (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $2.49 Eastwood Great Work.
This film really highlights Clint's maturity as a director. Originally considered no more than the companion piece to "Flags," Letters proved to be so much more. Japanese star Ken Watanabe provided Eastwood with a great performance and the score is often underrated.
|
![]() | Million Dollar Baby (Two-Disc Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $0.59 Eastwood Great Work.
Originally overlooked in the box office, the film finally found its audience on dvd. A fine script and a fantastic performance by Hillary Swank carry this best picture winner. Really 2 movies in one, Eastwood directs the transition brilliantly.
|
![]() | High Plains Drifter
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $2.00 Underrated Eastwood Film.
One of Eastwood's earliest attempts, he makes a strong impression. Granted a significant amount of creative autonomy, Clint manages to bring depth and edginess to a script that could have been little more than a b-movie western. Now a common fixture on cable, it is often trivialized.
|
![]() | Blazing Saddles (30th Anniversary Special Edition)
Buy new: $6.49 / Used from: $2.13 Brooks Masterpiece.
Brooks' Wild West, Slapstick saga is carried by Cleavon Little, who gives the performance of his career. Comedic genius is also achieved by the supporting cast - Gene Wilder, Madeleine Kahn, and the recently deceased Harvey Korman.

|
![]() | The Producers (Movie-Only Edition)
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $1.21 Brooks Great Work.
Mel's directorial debut was a a smash hit. Once again Gene Wilder shines as an eccentric, quirky accountant in "The Producers." It is also much more linear than most of Brooks' films, where the storyline usually submits to the laughs.
|
![]() | History of the World Part I
Buy new: $10.49 / Used from: $4.95 Underrated Brooks Film.
Never in the discussion of the greatest of Brooks' works, "History" is nonetheless an excellent film full of laughs. This is the only of Brooks' great works in which the director plays a significant role in the film as well. Orson Welles, Madeleine Kahn, Harvey Korman, and Gregory Hines co-star.
|
![]() | His Girl Friday
Buy new: $4.98 / Used from: $2.40 Hawks Masterpiece.
Howard Hawks has been dubbed the master of the studio, and he shows it here. He takes the most out of a mediocre script and limited set to create an intriguing, heart-warming film that is funny, romantic, and thrilling all at once. Cary Grant is superb and Rosalind Russell gives the performance of her career.
|
![]() | The Big Sleep
Buy new: $5.79 / Used from: $4.99 Hawks Great Work.
At first glance, one would think this film was directed by John Huston. A fine film noir, featuring tough-guy Humphrey Bogart and femme fatale (and future wife) Lauren Bacall. Bogey is the only man that could bring the kind of grit to a character like Philip Marlowe.
|
![]() | Gentlemen Prefer Blondes
Buy new: $10.49 / Used from: $5.66 Hawks Great Work.
This is really just a lighthearted musical, with sterling performances by Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell. This not only shows Hawks' range but also his unfailing ability to provide quality crowd-pleasing movies. His direction takes a mediocre script and turns out a quality performance.
|
![]() | Monkey Business
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $6.49 Underrated Hawks Film.
Another one of Hawks' crowd-pleasers, it manages to combine light sci-fi and fantastic humor. As usual, Cary Grant carries to film, and Ginger Rogers manages to keep up. Marylin Monroe gives a humorous supporting performance and a creative script keeps the laughs rolling.
|
![]() | On the Waterfront (Special Edition)
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $9.00 Kazan Masterpiece.
The old Turk, Elia Kazan, directs Eva Marie Saint and Marlon Brando to their best performances (including The Godfather.) Everything worked in this movie, the acting, the splendid cinematography, the great and quotable script, and Brando's heartwrenching performance. Surely, it is Kazan's best.
|
![]() | Gentleman's Agreement
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $2.65 Kazan Great Work.
This may be more noble than good. Timely, it attacks covert anti-semitism in American society and features a strong showing by Gregory Peck. Celeste Holm of "All About Eve" fame has a small, but significant role.
|
![]() | A Streetcar Named Desire (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $18.99 / Used from: $7.70 Kazan Great Work.
Aside from Kazan's excellent direction, this movie is best known as the best adaptation of a Tennessee Williams' play. Marlon Brando is excellent and a mature Vivien Leigh again shows her quality. It's Kazan's most electric piece.
|
![]() | East of Eden (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $22.99 / Used from: $6.89 Underrated Kazan Film.
Best known as James Dean's first film, "Eden" was shaped well by Kazan. The age old story of brothers jockeying for a father's affection takes centerstage and dean delivers the first of three knockout performances.
|
![]() | All About Eve (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $9.32 Mankiewicz Masterpiece.
It could be called "All About Women" and features a plethora of A-list actresses, including Bette Davis, Celeste Holm, Anne Baxter, Thelma Ritter, and Marylin Monroe. Joseph L. is able to balance the egos to create one of the greatest dramas of all time.
|
![]() | Cleopatra (Five Star Collection)
Buy used from: $7.82 Mankiewicz Great Work.
Joseph helmed this epic that stood for decades as the most expensive film ever made (adjusted for inflation). It is really an entertaining historical epic that features a knockout performance by Elizabeth Taylor. Richard Burton, Rex Harrison, and Hume Cronyn all co-star.
|
![]() | The Ghost and Mrs. Muir
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $6.77 Mankiewicz Great Work.
A technical masterpiece, Mrs. Muir seems a bit dated now, but can still work if you are in the right mood. Gene Tierney, an often overlooked actress, carries the load and does well in this one. George Sanders, Natalie Wood, and Rex Harrison co-star.
|
![]() | People Will Talk
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $5.93 Underrated Mankiewicz Film.
This film, carried by Cary Grant, is admittedly very dated now. Due to changes in Social mores in the past 5 decades or so leave the films plot a bit lackluster. Still, Mankiewicz gets the best out of Jeanne Crain, star of "Leave her to Heaven."
|
![]() | Ninotchka
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $6.79 Lubitsch Masterpiece.
And Garbo laughs, which in itself proved to be quite an achievement for a director. Ernst Lubitsch provides the most successful of the Garbo transitions to talkies. Some 70 years after its filming, Ninotchka still manages to provide legitimate laughs.
|
![]() | To Be or Not to Be
Buy used from: $13.88 Lubitsch Great Work.
This wartime comedy is mostly remembered as the last film of Carole Lombard, the delightfully funny actress who was a casualty of WWII. However, the film manages its own laughs and remains one of the top classic comedies.
|
![]() | The Shop Around the Corner
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $10.98 Lubitsch Great Work.
This film was remade as the modern day romcom "You've Got Mail." Somehow, Jimmy Steward and Margaret Sullivan seem to provide more chemistry than Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. Basically a fun, light-hearted romcom.
|
![]() | Angel (1937) [ NON-USA FORMAT, PAL, Reg.2 Import - Spain ]
Buy used from: $27.99 Underrated Lubitsch Film.
A delightful mix of romcom and drama, "Angel" manages to bring the best out of Melvyn Douglas. Marlene Dietrich also gives an above average performance.
|
![]() | The Searchers (Two-Disc Anniversary Edition)
Buy new: $24.49 / Used from: $4.48 Ford Masterpiece.
Without question John Ford's best work, and likely John Wayne's as well. This is another example of a movie that could well have been run of the mill, but was made so much more by Ford's direction and the complexity of Wayne's character.
|
![]() | The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
Buy used from: $3.47 Ford Great Work.
This is one of Ford's greatest and also Jimmy Stewart's best Western. Great script and quite an unusual Western, featuring a reluctant pacifist as the hero. John Wayne, Lee Marvin, and Vera Miles co-star.
|
![]() | Stagecoach (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $24.49 / Used from: $8.25 Ford Great Work.
This is the film that really put Ford on the map, and was also part of the great batch of movies to come out in 1939. The score is masterful and the cast impressive, including John Wayne, John Carradine, and Thomas Mitchell. Mitchell won an oscar for his performance.
|
![]() | She Wore a Yellow Ribbon
Buy new: $5.79 / Used from: $4.25 Underrated Ford Film.
This may not be as underrated as it is the least popular of Ford's best films. Another collaboration with John Wayne illustrates the good working relationship the two had. Most of their collective work was very good, if not masterful. This is no different.
|
![]() | Dracula (75th Anniversary Edition) (Universal Legacy Series)
Buy new: $20.49 / Used from: $14.84 Browning Masterpiece.
Without question the best of the classic universal horror pictures. The scenes are top quality for the era and Bela Lugosi's interpretation of the old count is priceless. It is exactly this film's direction that makes it so scary in an era where special effects couldn't garner scares.
|
![]() | Freaks
Buy new: $5.79 / Used from: $6.98 Browning Great Work.
This film could not be made today. It did, in fact, feature real circus "freaks" and it was the authenticity that made the film so frightening. The frame of the story is a bit cheesy, but the main part of the film is masterfully done. It is a haunting, disturbing masterpiece.
|
![]() | Mad Love (1935) & The Devil Doll (1936
Buy used from: $26.90 Browning Great Work.
The second part of this double feature, "The Devil Doll," is one of the forgotten masterpieces of Tod Browning. Unfortunately the film is not available on its own, but it is worth obtaining anyway. Maureen O'Sullivan and Lionel Barrymore both star in the film.
|
![]() | Hollywood's Legends of Horror Collection (Doctor X / The Return of Doctor X / Mad Love / The Devil Doll / Mark of the Vampire / The Mask of Fu Manchu)
Buy new: $28.49 / Used from: $24.00 Underrated Browning Film.
Again, only available in a collection, "Mark of the Vampire" is one of Browning's forgotten works. Essentially an attempt to recapture the success of "Dracula," this film features Bela Lugosi and Lionel Barrymore. It is not Browning's best but not as bad as some say either.
|
![]() | Gone with the Wind (Four-Disc Collector's Edition) 1939
Buy used from: $19.99 Fleming Masterpiece.
Victor Fleming's contribution to the greatest epic in cinema history is questionable. George Cukor and Sam Wood played a part in the film's creation and David Selznick lent a great deal of creative input. Other than that, its hard to argue with the quality of the film.
|
![]() | The Wizard of Oz (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy used from: $12.88 Fleming Great Work.
For any other director, this film would undoubtedly be his masterpiece, but for Fleming it is only his second best. He coaxed a grand performance out of a teenage Judy Garland and created a family feature that has survived generations. One of the best for sure.
|
![]() | Treasure Island
Buy new: $15.99 / Used from: $11.79 Fleming Great Work.
This film hardly compares with "Gone with the Wind" or "The Wizard of Oz," but it is a fine film in its own right. Wallace Beery manages to entertain and the decision to shoot entirely from Jim Hawkins' point of view was an interesting approach, especially for the era.
|
![]() | Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde Double Feature (1932/1941)
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $6.00 Underrated Fleming Film.
The second part of this double header, the 1941 version, was Fleming's best attempt at horror. Featuring a largely unconvincing Spencer Tracy, this was not his best work, but it is not as terrible as some say either. Lana Turner and Ingrid Bergman make up a solid supporting cast.
