The Exorcist (The Version You've Never Seen)The Exorcist (The Version You've Never Seen)
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $2.75
SCARIEST MOVIE EVER MADE... Make sure to get this version, as it include the infamous "crab walk" scene that was deleted from the original theatrical release.
Jaws / Jaws 2 (Value Pack)Jaws / Jaws 2 (Value Pack)
Buy used from: $26.80
Ironically absent from many horror film lists, Jaws is a horror flick in every sense of the word, as it ruined a generation's perception of the open ocean for a lifetime. Definitely the "scariest" movie ever made, next to The Exorcist. The sequel holds up as well, though I can't say the same for the rest of the series.
Alien (The Director's Cut)Alien (The Director's Cut)
Buy new: $16.49 / Used from: $6.15
Classic creature feature that brought H.R. Giger's artistic talent into the mainstream with his award-winning costume design. Personally, I've always preferred the faster-paced and campier sequel however.
HalloweenHalloween
Buy new: $11.49 / Used from: $2.74
John Carpenter at his finest. Halloween took the stalking killer concept to a whole new extreme with this gem. The remake failed miserably, thankfully though the original has aged pretty well, and is definitely worth another viewing by any horror film buff, young and old.
Dawn of the Dead (Ultimate Edition)Dawn of the Dead (Ultimate Edition)
Buy new: $37.49 / Used from: $16.73
Sequel to "Night," Dawn of the Dead was a better movie on all counts... more gore, action, and character development--all due to a sizable budget. For those of you that are new to Romero's 1978 follow-up to NOTLD, note that it's more of a satire/comedy in comparison to the first, with the 2004 remake going in the complete opposite direction of a balls-to-the-wall extreme action film.
PhantasmPhantasm
Buy new: $8.49 / Used from: $2.82
The Phantasm series is known as one of the hallmark cult classics that defined an era, and defined the careers of Angus Scrimm (the "Tall Man") and Reggie Bannister (the acoustic guitar playing "hero"). Once you have seen it, you will never forget the image of flying steel balls (known in the film as "sentinel" spheres).
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2-Disc Ultimate Edition)The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2-Disc Ultimate Edition)
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $3.43
The movie that single-handedly launched the slasher subgenre of horror flicks, it featured possibly the creepiest opening act in movie history. Unfortunately, the plot becomes a bit convoluted towards the end, but the film has definitely earned its status as a classic to be reckoned with.
Zombi 2 (25th Anniversary Special Edition 2-Disc Set)Zombi 2 (25th Anniversary Special Edition 2-Disc Set)
Buy new: $16.49 / Used from: $16.64
For fans of Romero and zombie films in general, this is a must buy. It took some time before I gave this Italian epic a chance, but was more than satisfied when I eventually did. Though the title may be generic, the film itself offers a distinctly European interpretation of the zombie infestation scenario, only this time much gorier and unique than its American counterparts.
Salem's LotSalem's Lot
Buy used from: $19.58
Stephen King's vampire epic brought to life in a made-for-TV movie. Don't be turned off by it not getting a proper theatrical release however, as it ranks right up there with Carrie and The Shining.
The Last House on the Left (Unrated Collectors Edition)The Last House on the Left (Unrated Collectors Edition)
Buy new: $17.49 / Used from: $4.80
Horrible film that works because of its sheer shock value, putting newer "torture porn" flicks such as Hostel to shame. Another cult classic that was ruined by a lackluster remake, the original is Wes Craven's best effort next to the Nightmare on Elm Street series.
The Hills Have Eyes (2-Disc Edition)The Hills Have Eyes (2-Disc Edition)
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $1.84
Little known cult flick that was brought back into the limelight with a decent remake. The original is still king, however.
Theater of BloodTheater of Blood
Buy used from: $2.28
Vincent Price, a well known B-movie icon from the 60's, took a different career path as an actor before releasing a starring in a couple shockers in the early 70's, this being arguably his best effort of the decade.
Raw MeatRaw Meat
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $3.98
Very cool find on my part, Raw Meat focuses on one deranged family of cannibals that seem to have taken a few evolutionary steps in the opposite direction, living out their entire lives in the abandoned portions of London's subway system.
The Abominable Dr. PhibesThe Abominable Dr. Phibes
Buy used from: $2.50
Though I prefer Price's performance in Theater Blood, most people consider his role as Dr. Phibes the best of his career. See both for yourself, and reach your own conclusion.
Trilogy of TerrorTrilogy of Terror
Buy new: $17.49 / Used from: $12.26
Another collection of horror tales, with the last being particularly notorious in its depiction of a murderous African Zuni Doll.
The AsylumThe Asylum
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $7.95
Tales From the Crypt-like collection of horror stories, starring legendary actor Peter Cushing.
EraserheadEraserhead
Buy new: $23.49 / Used from: $13.99
Depressing and twisted tale of a pathetic printer on what seems to be a permanent "vacation." Our utterly loathsome Henry sinks deeper down the spiral after his short-term marriage ends when his wife abandons him, granting him sole custody of their monster-like child.
The Legend of Boggy CreekThe Legend of Boggy Creek
Buy new: $7.95 / Used from: $3.38
The original horror-oriented "docudrama" that would influence The Blair Witch Project decades later... Creepy flick about a real life Bigfoot-type creature in Arkansas.
The Original Faces of Death: 30th Anniversary EditionThe Original Faces of Death: 30th Anniversary Edition
Buy new: $22.49
No 70's horror list would be complete without an entry for Faces of Death. Equally parts disturbing and horrifying, this film is a collection of real-life footage of people dead and in the act of dying. Controversial to this day of course, though no true "horror" fan is worth their salt without having this sickening montage of documentary footage in their repertoire.
