Gradual improvements in classic comic strip2
Album 2 of the Flying Buttress classics library collects the July 1935 - April 1936 daily newspaper strips.

Young Terry Lee and his two-fisted guardian Pat Ryan got a red-hot welcome to China in the first episode. Pat, beaten by a gang of thugs in an attempt to prevent the murder of a mining engineer, is now pressured by the Singapore police into working undercover to find those behind the murder. The presence of Normandie Drake, who developed a crush on Pat in the previous episode, complicates matters. However it is Normandie's aunt who proves to be the real threat to the romance, and Pat and the gang are on the rebound when they run into pirate Captain Judas and his partner, Burma, a beautiful but tough cookie. Judas loses his cool when things heat up between Pat and Burma. Chilled by his reaction Burma ices him with a lamp and she and the gang light out into the darkness.

Things are still pretty crude in this early adventure of the classic comic strip but the plotting never flags and Caniff's abilities in characterization are improving - dramatically!
